Priyanka congratulates Sania Mirza as they share Time's Most Influential 100 honour

The Bollywood actress and tennis champ earned spots on Time's coveted annual list - and Priyanka made it to the cover!
22 Apr, 2016

Priyanka Chopra's got a new feather in her cap.

Time named her as one of The 100 Most Influential People of 2016. Not only this, they even put her on the cover of the magazine's special edition.

Priyanka was of course quite pleased by the honour:

She also gave a shout-out to the other Indian woman on the list, Sania Mirza:

Priyanka has been named among the likes of actors Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Idris Elba, Charlize Theron and Melissa McCarthy in the artists category of the list, while Sania Mirza joined Leonardo DiCaprio, Nicki Minaj and Adele in the Icons category.

In her profile written by the Rock aka Dwayne Johnson, Priyanka is described as a "star rising higher" and lauded for her "drive, ambition, self-respect" and knowing that "there's no substitute for hard work."

Sania, whose profile is written by Sachin Tendulkar, is hailed as an "inspiration" on the court. He lauded her "dedication and willpower" to reinvent herself fully as a doubles player when her singles career was cut short by wrist injuries, reports Times of India.

Other Indians on the list include RBI governor Raghuram Rajan, Google CEO Sundar Pichai and founders of Flipkart Binny Bansal and Sachin Bansal.

Apart from the 6 mentioned here, there is one more Indian -environmentalist Sunita Narain. As such the list from India is quite diverse: 1) entertainer: Priyanka Choora 2) sports person: Sania Mira 3) entrepreuners: the Bansal brothers 4) Environmentalist: Sunita Narain 5) Brueaucrat and economist: Raghu Ram Rajan 6) corporate captain: Sundar Pichai

There was a time when Indian beauties were winning all the beauty contests. Then the trend disappeared. Now hardly any Indian is crowned as a Beauty queen. Now Indian actresses are being projected as the best thing to happen in the world. This is a deliberate attempt to potrait India as the super country because West and US wants to prop it up as such as they have carved a role for it in their script.

Not making the Time magazine's list of 100 Most Influential People by any Pakistani creates the real ‘strategic imbalance’ between Pakistan and India rather than military hardware acquired by India.

@GA The list often looks ridiculous when you have in it names like Priyanka but no mention of persons like Edhi who has rendered infinite human services. I just hope he he would be chosen for the Nobel at some stage.

This recognition of influential people like Priyanka, Sania, Rajan, etc is also a matter of pride for Pakistan too. Man made boundaries doesn't rule out the historical and biological fact that we all belong to the Indus Valley civilisation. Religious faith doesn't come into it.

@Afzal It is simple. But, to have that happen on a large scale, the entire mindset of the country has to change, which is a tough task!:):):) It means ENCOURAGING men and women to do their best and providing a sympathetic and nurturing atmosphere.

Some Pakistani friends are talking about Mr. Abdul Sattar Eidhi , he is a saint and above such awards he is not doing all this for any award but even then he is entitled for Noble prize, may he live long and serve the downtrodden.

Mr Edhi reminds me of Mother Teresa who selflessly gave her life to the greater cause of humanity. Why is the Government of Pakistan not shouting hoarse from roof tops about Mr. Edhi achievements, and his contribution to the world at large. It is indeed unfortunate that in today's world the work of genuine do gooders has to advertised for them to be noticed and rewarded. While a person like Mr. Edhi would not be clamouring for an award, the government must take pains to enlighten the world of the impact his work has on the lives of ordinary citizens of a country.
