Pakistanis bash Islamophobia with #1in5Muslims and the results are hilarious

The Sun just got served. Also, Muslims are pretty funny on Twitter!
24 Nov, 2015

British tabloid The Sun caused a stir when it carried a story titled "1 in 5 Brit Muslims’ sympathy for jihadis on its front page yesterday.

The story alleged that "nearly one in five British Muslims has some sympathy with those who have fled the UK to fight for IS in Syria," and that these figures emerged from an "exclusive poll conducted after the Paris atrocities."

With incidents of Islamophobia on the rise, complaints about The Sun's poll poured in: British newspaper The Independent said The Sun's interpretation of the poll prompted an unprecedented number of complaints to the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO). Other media outlets were quick to weigh in on the issue too, questioning the accuracy of The Sun's report.

But the weightiest blow to The Sun comes, perhaps, from a source with a greater sense of humour: Twitter, of course.

Soon after The Sun's report saw the light of day, Muslims and non-Muslims alike took to Twitter under the banner of #1in5Muslims, cooking up inane and often hilarious 'facts' and generalizations about Muslims to rival The Sun's assertion.

The twitterati in Pakistan didn't disappoint — here's a choice selection of what #1in5Muslims might get up to, as per, well, everyone.

Ah, Muslims. The truth is painful isn't it?

And when they aren't stealing shoes, they're totally dreaming about love.

And chai:

And avoiding chai:

We know #1in5Muslims will totally get this one:

And this one (who doesn't love Zayn Malik?):

And this one:

Even Adele can't avoid being dragged into this conversation:

Neither can Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif:

The hashtag revealed some very real truths about the Muslim community... like this one:

And this one:

And lastly — don't we all just think we're the funniest ever?

Ahmed Nov 24, 2015 04:49pm
I am from the UK it may not be 1 in 5 but there is a very significant proportion of the young people who support the extremists. This is serious and lets not dismiss it.
Sunil Nov 24, 2015 04:59pm
It is true, there is a rise of radicals in Britain.
Hasan Nov 24, 2015 05:17pm
@Ahmed That's strange, I'm here in the UK too and don't know literally a single person who has any support for Daesh. Bearing in mind the British Muslim population is something close to 2.7 million, and the total number of British Muslims believed connected to Daesh is 400, I'm not sure where you're getting your statistics. Oh, and in case you don't have a calculator over there, that means 0.014% of British Muslims are believed to be supporting Daesh - far lower than the percentage of British Jews who support Israel, and far lower than the percentage of British Hindus who support Modi. @Hasan , you might be surprised. Many Indian Muslims support Modi too.
Raoul Nov 24, 2015 06:09pm
brilliant ! great reverts to the Sun.....
Nadim Nov 24, 2015 07:30pm
@HASAN: I totally agree I live in UK and have spoken to lots of muslim people over the last few days and not a single person supported Daesh. My argument is that I have never supported Daesh or Alqaeda, and have no sympathies for them but still get the blame for their actions . Most British people voted (elected and re-elected after the war) for Tony Blair who is responsible for the quagmire and millions of deaths in Iraq and Syria but they still think thye have the moral high ground.

#1in5Muslims are nodding in agreement and retweeting :) Very soon, so will the other 4.
optimist Nov 24, 2015 08:18pm
It is wrong to label terrorists as Muslim terrorists. Terrorists are simply terrorists they don't have a religion.
Zack Khan-USA Nov 24, 2015 09:52pm
I think its less than 1 in 5, because my extra extended family lives in USA, and here's what youth of my clan are interested in(this team consist of more than 35 kids ranging from 6 to 22, i stopped counting after 35!): 1. Zain Malik 2. Skateboarding( my son won few championships, even tho I don't approve of the sport, I don't even consider it a sport) 3. UIC 4. Body building 5. Taco bell 6. PS4 7. Swimming(won varsity medals, even though she is sophomore in high school). Anything outside the above list we American Muslims are not interested in!
Zack Khan-USA Nov 24, 2015 09:53pm
@Hasan well said!
khan Nov 24, 2015 10:12pm
Awesome. This is the best way to tackle a serious issue.
Satyam vada Nov 24, 2015 10:44pm
Nothing funny. radicalization of muslims whether 1/5 or 1/10 is a serious issue.
imtiaz faruqui Nov 25, 2015 02:45am
1 in 5 shave every day.
SALIM HABIB Nov 25, 2015 04:28am
This is all very sad and the things are out of the hands of the politicians, let the people from acedemics come up with some solutions or let all the groups go to the united natiopns both who are hurt and who are hurting and talk how are they going to solve these problems, give humanity a chance.
Nick Nov 25, 2015 08:30am

@Hasan This is spot on mate. Radicalization is a minority in every religion It's just that in Islam it is bounced up more .
