Replace harmful sugars and carbs in your diet with these five superfoods:

1- Almonds

Research has shown that almonds may reduce the rise in glucose (blood sugar) and insulin levels after meals. And even though they're high in calories, the nuts help weight control because they make you feel full quickly after eating them.

2- Dark green leafy vegetables

Green leafy vegetables like spinach, kale, broccoli, cabbage and lettuce are extremely low in calories and carbohydrates. Research reveals that eating at least a serving and a half of green leafy vegetables every day reduces diabetes risk by 14 percent.

3- Oily fish (e.g. salmon, mackarel, herring)

Oily fish like salmon is an extremely high source of Omega-3 essential fatty acids that lower blood sugar levels, reduce inflammation and reduce risk for heart disease.

Diabetics are recommended to consume fish twice a week to benefit from its protection against kidney disease. Fish also helps counter Vitamin D deficiencies in diabetics.

4- Sweet potatoes

According to the American Diabetes Association, sweet potatoes lower insulin resistance in diabetics, stabilising their blood sugar levels. They are also high in fibre, which helps lower levels of bad' LDL cholesterol, which is linked to heart disease.

5- Oatmeal

Oatmeal is the ideal breakfast for diabetics. It is packed with soluble fiber that slows the absorption of glucose from food in the stomach keeping blood-sugar levels under control.

Thanks for sending these useful informations for diabetic as well as pre-diabetic peoples. One thing has been missed. Surprisingly, mango eating with peal is also useful in managing and preventing diabetes.

The trouble with oatmeal is that it is usually consumed with sugar or jaggery. It may be better breakfast than other western breakfast cereals that are loaded with sugar, but most of south asian savory breakfasts are better than these western cereal breakfasts. Also, Peanuts are a lot cheaper for asian pocket books than almonds or cashew and have nearly identical benefits compared to more expensive nuts like almonds. Studies have not found any difference between in benefits between peanuts and other nuts. Peanuts are extremely cheap, loaded with protein and good fats and have a very low glycemic index.

Diabetic association says, if one of the parents is diabetic, half of their children are likely to become diabetic. The advice is, look for the child who is consuming more sweets than others. Control that child strictly to extend the period of his/her sugar luxuries.

@JP: Rightly said about oats. The typical breakfast of the subcontinent (I am familiar with the one from South India only) is much more healthier than oats. Some diabetics in India use a broken wheat gruel for breakfast and dinner instead of oatmeal which costs a lot and requires milk, etc. I personally use a broken wheat gruel for dinner and my sugar has gone down. Cashew is supposed to be really bad and I have stopped that. Not sure if almonds and peanuts are equivalent as almonds seem to have Omega 3 acids which you can also get from flaxseed,

@JP . Boil oats with water and add a bit of any curried vegetables which already has necessary salt or have oats uppma. Yes peanuts are good but cashew nuts are high in cholesterol. All nears either halal or kosher is not good.

@JP you don't have to add sugar ,I just add milk in my oatmeal breakfast.iam having oatmeal breakfast for years.it helps in maintaining high blood pressure and diabetes.

@JP not true, get organic cereal. Look at the package and see what it contains. Mix with dates warm milk anda almonds. Add bananas and enjoy

Please try this. In a glass of water dip a ladies finger, slit 90% cross wise longitudinally. Keep it overnight to consume in empty stomach. Try for a month a get good response. Throw away the ladies finger before drinking water. Similarly, take a small amount of dry roasted and powdered methi in empty stomach. Stop after a month as this will reduce your cholesterol level.
