What's making Nawazuddin Siddiqui insecure?

The Manjhi actor is concerned whether his later roles will be as well-received as the ones he's doing now

Nawazuddin Siddiqui's come a long way in his career, but the success hasn't gone to his head. In fact, he's now more worried than ever about doing justice to the characters he plays. This effort is making him insecure.

Unlike many actors who have had their roots in Bollywood, Nawazuddin was a loner who worked against the tide to reach the top: "I’m from a family that is not even remotely related to Bollywood — my physical appearance isn’t the kind you’d expect to see in a Hindi film. But I knew I was an actor."

However, as time passed, Nawazuddin's insecurities changed. Earlier, he was concerned about getting roles and now he is worried about choosing the right ones: “Industry format mein hi insecurity hai....Formula hi insecurity wala hai. When I was trying to make my way in, about 70% films had the same plot — a hero, a heroine and a villain. There was hardly anything for anyone else. So, I was insecure about getting work. But I was clear kay kaam chota ya bara ho... bas mile aur main acha kar sakoon. The insecurity is different now."

With Manjhi — The Mountain Man garnering a lot of success, the insecurity is about about his character affecting his viewers: “Now, the insecurity is: if the character will leave its mark on the audience or not. The fresh guy I am playing...will he be fresh enough or not — kahin pichle character ka hangover toh nahi hoga? Appreciation isko milega ya pichle wale ke hangover mein hi honge log? It’s crucial that the character leaves its mark."

Despite the fame he has received, 41-year-old Nawazuddin remains humble and has received more than he had imagined: “Jitna socha tha usse zyada mila. All I wanted was to get work — screen-time of the role didn’t matter to me. I’m an actor and I wanted to work — be it in, films, theatre or TV,” says Nawaz who will soon be sharing screen space with Shahrukh Khan in Raees.

Nawazuddin is now the BEST actor in Bollywood. This is indisputable. Shatrughan Sinha recently called him the "find of the century".

After watching the first part of Gangs of Wasseypur, I thought no one could top Manoj Bajpai in that movie. How wrong was I though, Nawazuddin made that movie his own. Absolutely brilliant actor.

@Asad Shairani - Gangs of Wasseypur 3 is being filmed and is being written and directed by Zeeshan Qadri (the guy who played the role of Definite in Part 2). It will probably have Irffan Khan. Then you will see the magic.

Nawazuddin should work in Marathi Cinema which is content driven. He will get more satisfaction. It was nice to see Huma Quereshi , Tisca Chopra in Marathi film "Highway".

Finest self made artist. Superb performance in Badlapur. One of the most bankable star currently. He shouldn't be swayed and try to play hero role. He should continue with negative role.

Nawazuddin a very good actor. He wants to be selective and has aggressively slighted typical formula movies (Hero, Heroin and a Villain) to the extent that now he is victim of his own snobbery (sort of). An actor can be selective, however, once given and accepted a role, he/she should play it to its best. Indeed in a typical hero role, physical attributes and dancing skills are important, however, all this can be easily ignored if the role is played well by an average looking actor. So Mr. Siddiqui, keep your options open, play whatever you feel you can do justice to.

@Gaurav Arya Sir I am looking forward to it. Though I must confess I'm a little skeptical of Anurag Kashyap's absence.

Choose the work with open eyes and mind and when you decide, do with your 100% efforts and honesty. Leave all other worries on Allah . You cant control all the parameters. So sleep well in the night.
