Meet the Pakistani woman who honeymoon'd alone after her husband's visa got rejected

Meet the Pakistani woman who honeymoon'd alone after her husband's visa got rejected

The struggle is real when you have a Pakistani passport... but at least this couple has a sense of humour!
Updated 28 Mar, 2019

When you have a Pakistani passport, you can't just let wanderlust get the better of you.

Every last detail of a vacation abroad has to be planned to the nines and even then, there comes a time when it's just out of your hands and all you can do is pray that you get a visa.

Meet newlyweds Huma Mobin and Arsalaan Sever Butt from Lahore who are the latest victims of the green passport curse.

The couple, who got married less than a year ago and had already been to the Maldives for their first honeymoon, had a second honeymoon/family trip to Greece all planned out when disaster struck: Arsalaan's visa got rejected.

"Not once did it really cross our minds that Arsalaan wouldn't get his visa, we were all concerned that mine would be rejected! He's very well-traveled so it truly came as a shock to us," shares Huma.

"Needless to say, I didn't want to go at first but a lot of investment had gone into it; my husband's parents, phuphi and chacha were all set to go and everything had been paid for so I couldn't really back out of it."

She adds: "Naturally, I cried my eyes out in my mother-in-law's lap the first night. She missed Arsalan a lot too, he's the life of the party usually but then she was like 'beta, dekho, aaye hai toh paisay halal karlo bus' so that's what I tried to do."

The in laws went along with Huma's shenanigans with a smile
The in laws went along with Huma's shenanigans with a smile

Mobin soldiered through and stuck to her itinerary, documenting her every move so Arsalaan knows just how much she wished he was there.

Just in case Arsalaan thought she didn't miss him, she came back with proof.
Just in case Arsalaan thought she didn't miss him, she came back with proof.

They say time heals all wounds...well, not for Huma! The longer she spent away from her significant other, the more she missed him.

Crying face on point

This Arsalaan's one lucky fella.

Though Huma does admit her Snapchat stories tell a very different, not so bleak tale

If this wasn't already a tragedy for the books, Huma then also lost her phone.

The entire holiday was spent longing for the two things that mattered most to her

Huma reveals that it was a picture her husband sent while he was in Budapest that kickstarted this trend.

Where it all started
Where it all started

She even added that her father-in-law started jokingly calling her a fraud, saying she'd just take one sad picture and then go on gallivanting around town, being a typical tourist.

While we're too embarrassed to even Snapchat freely in public, here's Huma, who feels no shame in her game.

We asked if she got any puzzled looks.

"No, the place is filled with tourists doing weird things. Hey, at least I wasn't pouting!" she points out.

What's the point of traveling overseas, just to shoot miserable selfies?? Stupidity to the highest.... If I was her, I would've declined to accept visa for myself, if my husband could not accompany me on a honeymoon. That would have been an apt response...

The problem is that, for most countries, the airline tickets and hotel reservation must be submitted with the visa application. Visa application fees in non-refundable and sometimes airlines will not refund the 100% money. If you have the Green Passport, my advice is to celebrate your honeymoon in Pakistan.

But with this fame, she will get criticism too. Are we supposed to feel sorry for her? Are we supposed to condemn our country's passport and standing in the world? What reaction was she looking for? Leaving a spouse behind and go for honeymoon defies logic!

I fully support this. Why only men should have fun? I like spirit of this woman. She is entitled to enjoy her life and take her decision on her own. Why should men judge her for her decision? Bravo Lady, keep it up ad enjoy your life to the fullest the way you want.

Feel sorry for the couple but a great sense of humor. Do not worry about the critics, probably they never went to honeymoon! And do not forget to send a set of pictures to Greek National Tourism Office

Visa or no visa, the family showed the spirit of stoically moving on , not losing the investment, and coming out non to worse off. That is admirable.

Best wishes to the couple. The honeymoon may not have worked out as planned, but after witnessing this couple's sense of humour I get the impression they are going to have a fun married life :) Try the Maldives next time, you will not need a Visa and its beautiful. (P.S. A lot of nasty and judgemental comments here. Take it easy people, no need to get so worked up)

Wow! Why are there so many haters? First off, a lot of flights/hotel bookings are non-refundable. It would be more of a waste not to go. Second, atleast she and her in-laws have a sense of humour about it. Unlike many in these comments!

Honeymoon is not a place it is a feeling mostly between two people preferably of opposite sex. By the sounds of it the couple is wealthy and have already had more than honeymoon trips before this one. It might have been possible to get reduced refunds and go elsewhere or not go at all whatever turns anyone's crank. There are so many places all over the world and in Pakistan why bother with Greece. In my case a suggestion was made that go on a certain trip to keep it simple, my response I am not even going to heaven without her. The End.

I think this kind of show-off in a poor country like Pakistan is not helping the situation especially when difference between poor and rich class is massive. It your life & your choice (good or bad), but please don't publicize your honeymoon adventure rather keep it to yourself & enjoy your life. No offense!

This makes no sense. Husband was alone in Budapest, Hungary....while she was alone in Greece? Both Hungary and Greece are members of the Schengen zone. So if he was already in Hungary, all he needed to do was hop on a plane to Greece. There is no passport control between Schengen member states. Am I missing something?
