Every year there are lots of new movies and TV shows to watch but not everything makes it to our watch list. As the new year commences, Netflix dropped its film preview for 2023 and by the looks of it, we’re not getting up from the couch anytime soon.

The two-and-a-half-minute long preview dropped on Wednesday and opens with a glimpse of Gal Gadot from Heart of Stone saying “I’m coming for you”. While that felt personal, it shifts to Kevin Hart from Lift, Eddie Murphy and Jonah Hill’s You People, Chris Hemsworth’s Extraction 2, Idris Elba’s Luther: The Fallen Sun, Jennifer Lopez’s The Mother and more.

Here are some Netflix movies from the newly-revealed lineup we’re looking forward to watching this year:

Damsel

If you’re a Stranger Things and Enola Holmes fan then you must be waiting for Millie Bobby Brown’s upcoming role as Princess Elodie. At least, we are because her upcoming film Damsel is at the top of our list.

The film is based on a damsel, played by Brown, who agrees to marry a handsome prince only to discover that the royal family has recruited her as a sacrifice to repay an ancient debt. She’s thrown into a cave with a fire-breathing dragon and must rely on her wit and will to survive.

The thriller also stars Angela Bassett, Robin Wright, Sam Sharma and Nick Robinson and will release on October 13.

Your Place or Mine

A new rom-com starring Reese Witherspoon? You don’t have to tell us twice. Let’s just say we’ve been wanting to see gold old rom-coms that take us back to the Sweet Home Alabama, 27 Dresses and 10 Things I Hate About You era. Maybe Netflix, the entertainment tooth-fairy, heard our wishes and presented us Your Place or Mine.

The upcoming film stars Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher as Debbie and Peter, two best friends who are complete and total opposites. Debbie craves routine with her son in LA while Peter thrives on change in New York. When they swap houses, they discover what they really want in life and what they think they want isn’t exactly what they need. The film will release on Feb 10.

Murder Mystery 2

It’s not a comedy-thriller without Adam Sandler or Kevin Hart. While we’ll be seeing Hart in a new role, a rather serious one, Sandler is back with Jennifer Aniston as full-time detectives in Murder Mystery 2.

In the film, the detectives find themselves at the centre of an international abduction when their friend, the Maharaja, is kidnapped at his own wedding. The film starring Sandler, Aniston, Adeel Akhtar and Mark Strong will release on March 31.

Heart of Stone

We heard of Alia Bhatt, Gadot and Jamie Dornan’s Heart of Stone from Bhatt on Instagram who often bragged about her co-stars but let’s just say, Netflix’s trailer left us stunned.

The film revolves around Rachel Stone, an intelligence operative played by Gadot. She’s the only woman who stands between her powerful, global, peace-keeping organisation and the loss of its most valuable yet dangerous asset that she must restore.

Heart of Stone is set to have its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival starting today. The film will release on the OTT site on August 11.

Lift

We don’t know about you, but we’re sold to watch Lift solely for Hart, who for once, isn’t cracking a joke in a film. The new film starring Money Heist’s Tokyo, Úrsula Corberó, Mbatha-Raw, Billy Magnussen, Korean-American singer Kim Yoon-ji, Jacob Batalon and Peaky Blinders’ Paul Anderson is about an international heist crew that has been recruited to prevent a terrorist attack.

The crew is seen pulling off the heist on a plane mid-flight and some scenes of what looks like Venice, Italy in the 2023 films preview by Netflix. Hart’s upcoming film will be available to watch on August 25.

Rebel Moon

Zack Snyder is always up for an action-packed film and he’s delivered. From the looks of it, Rebel Moon might be the action thriller of 2023.

Starring Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsou, Ed Skrein, Michiel Huisman, South-Korean actor Bae Doona and more, Netflix says it’s based on a peaceful colony on the edge of galaxy that finds itself threatened by the armies of Regent Balisarius, a tyrant who is in charge of interstellar armies. As the colony feels threatened, they dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past named Kora, played by Boutella, to seek warriors from neighbouring planets to help them stand their ground.

Rebel Moon will drop on Netflix on December 22.
