Europe was shaken to its very core on Saturday after news emerged of a heist most sinister. In a story that sounds like it could be the plot of an action-packed Netflix series, Nestle confirmed that a shipment of 413,793 Kit Kat bars had been stolen.
The crunchy cargo was en route from a facility in central Italy to sweet-toothed Poland when the truck carrying it disappeared; both the vehicle and its contents remain unaccounted for.
A spokesperson for the company said, “We’ve always encouraged people to have a break with Kit Kat, but it seems thieves have taken the message too literally and made a break with more than 12 tonnes of our chocolate.” Investigations into the heist are ongoing.
Users on X seemed to agree, someone was getting a break — and it definitely wasn’t the guys at Kit Kat.
Naturally, there was some discussion on semantics. After all, we needed to label this before it got too far.
Other users were more concerned with the thieves’ motives — what was going on in their heads, what could they possibly want with 12 tonnes of chocolate?
Netizens even had a bunch of potential suspects, including one particularly suspicious neighbour.
Other suspects were identified too, hopefully giving investigators a helpful list to go through.
The fact that over 400,000 chocolate bars went missing just before Easter did not make a very good case for one particular bunny.
Thankfully, Nestle confirmed the heist would not have a significant impact on chocolate supplies in the region and that consumers across Europe would be able to enjoy their favourite treats as usual.
Kit Kat also said the missing bars would be found, with measures in place to identify them using the unique batch codes found on each item.
