Kate Winslet may soon be trading Pandora for Middle-earth.

The Oscar-winning actor is in talks to join the cast of The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, the next big-screen instalment set in Middle-earth, according to Variety. If the deal goes through, Winslet would join Andy Serkis, who is directing the project while also reprising his iconic role as Gollum.

Warner Bros. has not officially confirmed the cast yet, though reports suggest familiar faces from the original trilogy could return. Among those rumoured are Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins and Ian McKellen as Gandalf.

The film brings together several of the creative forces behind the original adaptations of JRR Tolkien. Peter Jackson — who helmed both the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies — is producing alongside longtime collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens.

During a 2024 earnings call, David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, said the trio would be involved “every step of the way”.

For Winslet, the project would also mark a reunion with Jackson, who directed her in the 1994 cult drama Heavenly Creatures — one of her earliest breakthrough roles.

The upcoming film is currently slated to hit cinemas on December 17, 2027. While plot details remain under wraps, the story is believed to take place between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

The project arrives at a moment of corporate flux for the studio. Warner Bros. Discovery is in the process of being sold to Skydance Media in a deal backed by Paramount Global, a merger that could potentially reshape the company’s development slate. However, the Lord of the Rings franchise remains one of the studio’s most valuable properties.

Both the Lord of the Rings trilogy and its prequel series, The Hobbit, were major global box office successes, with each trilogy earning roughly $2.8 billion worldwide. Winslet herself is no stranger to blockbuster territory, having recently appeared in Avatar: Fire and Ash, the latest instalment in James Cameron’s sprawling sci-fi saga.

If negotiations conclude successfully, the move would place Winslet in yet another of cinema’s biggest fantasy worlds — this time alongside hobbits, wizards and a very persistent ring.
