“Whatever happened to Tommy Shelby?” That’s the first thing we hear in the trailer for Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, that released on Wednesday night. Shelby, played by Cillian Murphy, is shown pacing as a phone rings.
The scene soon cuts dramatically to show the film’s wartime atmosphere, a train bearing a swastika and nazis rendering their one-armed salutes. It shifts again and Shelby says, “I am not that man anymore”.
Shots of an explosion, a red scarf on a headstone and a spinning coin follow, with a voice telling the gangster he has to come back. He slams his fists on a table and we see flashes of machine-gun fire, and a shot of his co-star Barry Keoghan — whose role in the film remains undisclosed.
The trailer follows close on the heels of the release of the film’s poster, which was revealed to audiences earlier this month. In it, Shelby was shown riding a horse in his iconic suit and newsboy cap.
The poster also confirmed the film was to release on March 8 for a limited theatrical run followed by a Netflix release on March 20.
The plot remains a mystery, with only sparse details available. We know the film is set in 1940, amidst World War II and we know Shelby will return from a period of self-imposed exile.
We also know that a few other Peaky Blinders stars will be reprising their roles in the film alongside Murphy.
Sophie Rundle returns to the series as Shelby’s sister Ada Thorne, with Stephen Graham and Ned Dennehy coming back as Hayden Stagg and Charlie Strong, allies of the Shelby family. Packy Lee is back as Johnny Dogs, a loyal associate of the Midlands mafiosos, and Ian Peck will return as Curly, the trusty stable hand.
In an earlier interview with Netflix, Murphy said, “It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me.” He also said this one is for the fans.
In another treat from the franchise, a report from Deadline suggests there are plans for two six-part sequel series that will follow The Immortal Man. Set in the 1950s, it is unclear what role Shelby would have in the series — if any — but Murphy is confirmed to be on board as an executive producer.
