Koffee With Karan isn't ending, it's just moving to an OTT platform, reveals Karan Johar
Indian film director and host Karan Johar recently pulled a prank on pretty much everyone on Wednesday as he took to Instagram to announce that hit show Koffee With Karan won't be returning to the TV screens for good. But hours later he revealed that there is a twist in the tale.
On May 4, Johar had posted on Instagram that his show — which has aired since 2004 — will "not be returning". Initially he did not offer an explanation to his followers why the show has been cancelled. Instead his post read, "Hello, Koffee with Karan has been a part of my life, and yours, for six seasons now. I'd like to think we've made an impact and even found our place in pop culture history. And so, it is with a heavy heart I announce that Koffee with Karan will not be returning..."
Hours later, he clarified that while the show won't return to TV, it will indeed stream on OTT platform Disney+ Hotstar. The two-part announcement received a lot of comments and created a lot of buzz as it got many talking about iconic moments from the show.
His second announcement read, "Koffee with Karan will not be returning...on TV! Because every great story needs a good twist, I'm delighted to announce that Season 7 of Koffee With Karan will stream exclusively on Disney+ Hotstar!"
It further read that the biggest movie stars of the industry and across India will return to the famous tête-à-tête show to spill the beans while obviously enjoying a fresh cup of brew. Some rumours will be put to rest while games and rapid fire session will most likely continue in the upcoming season. "There will be conversations that go deep, about love, loss and everything we've all been through over the last few years," his post read, ending with a note that it will be " 'steaming' soon".
The post that initially announced that it won't be returning, received comments from Farah Khan and Rakul Preet Singh who expressed their concerns over the show coming to an 'end'.
Word about the seventh season had spread few weeks ago. A source close to the development told Pinkvilla, "Karan is currently shooting for Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani and it’s in May when he will wrap up a major chunk of the film. One calling it a schedule wrap, Karan will commence his work on his chat show, Koffee with Karan. The planning and pre-production has already begun and the team is now all ready to start shooting from mid-May."
The predicted guest list had also been leaked and it featured actors Akshay Kumar, Varun Dhawan, Kiara Advani, Anil Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Sidharth Malhotra, Rashmika Mandanna, Katrina Kaif and Siddhant Chaturvedi. Newlyweds Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt were also to make their first onscreen appearance as a married couple on season seven.
The first season of the talk show premiered in 2004 with Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol as guests. Over the span of 15 years, many celebrities have sat on the couch and signed the famous coffee mugs, including Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Karisma Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Hrithik Roshan, Sanjay Dutt, Lara Dutta, Twinkle Khanna, Rani Mukherji and many more.
