Pakistani Twitter celebrates as Babar Azam made captain of ICC's ODI and T20I teams of the year
Cricket is the one thing that unites Pakistanis and ever since the Pakistan cricket team almost made it to the T20 World Cup finals last year, people have been more hyped than ever. On Jan 21, the ICC released its 2021 Men's ODI Team of the Year as part of the ICC Awards and it had netizens celebrating the two Pakistani cricketers who made it to the team.
"Power-hitters, terrific all-rounders, fiery pacers. The 2021 ICC Men's ODI Team of the Year has all the bases covered," ICC captioned the post on Twitter with the list attached. Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman's names are on there with a "C" next to Azam's, indicating he's the captain.
On January 19, it also named Azam captain of its T20I Team of the Year. That team features Mohammad Rizwan, Shaheen Afridi and Azam.
The ICC Awards are an annual set of sports awards for international cricket that recognise and honour the best international cricket players of the year. Pakistani Twitter welcomed this with open arms, hailing Babar as a king.
Some said "we're living in the era of Babar Azam."
Others simply put Azam on a throne and added a crown on his head.
Azam really is out here winning.
This user pointed out that Azam is "the first ever Pakistani player to be named as captain of ICC ODI team of the year."
Users have been revelling in the fact that Pakistan has outperformed India this time.
Jokes were made.
And then there were cricket fans who are already looking forward to the next Pakistan India match, even if it's nine months away.
People are celebrating the Pakistani team's comeback.
Fans are congratulating the players on this great achievement.
The Green Shirts keep making us proud! We're super excited about the next World Cup series just like that overexcited fan who has already marked the date for the next Indo-Pak match.
