Hania Aamir's upcoming drama Sang-e-Mah highlights the 'social evil' of 'ghag'

Sang-e-Mah, an upcoming HUM TV drama, has made news for its star-studded cast but its plot seems to be equally newsworthy.

The drama stars singer Atif Aslam, Hania Aamir, Kubra Khan, Zaviyar Ejaz, Sania Saeed, Omair Rana, Naumaan Ijaz and Mikaal Zulfiqar. Sang-e-Mah is also going to be tackling problematic traditions, according to Aamir.

Clearly the show is going to deal with some serious issues. Aamir who is quite active on social media explained what ghag is and how it's a custom most people are unaware of.

She said ghag is a custom in which "a man lays claims to a woman to marry her by force." Calling it a "social evil," the actor said ghag is "destructive" and has ruined many lives.

"This is done in many ways. Sometimes the 'wanting to be' groom fires several gunshots outside the woman's house claiming her for marriage," Aamir said. Aamir also said that it is a form of an announcement which insinuates that "this girl is my bride and anyone who tries to send a proposal will meet a distasteful fate."

Aamir also used the Sang-e-Mah hashtag in her caption, leading us to believe the topic will be tackled on the show.

In the trailer released on Friday, singer and now actor Aslam raises his weapon to fire outside of Aamir's house.

People wondered in the comment section what was going on in the clip and why Aslam was firing outside Aamir's house. Soon after, the Ishqiya actor shared her post on Instagram.

In 2013, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly passed a law declaring ghag an offence punishable with up to seven years imprisonment or Rs500,000 fine or both. In 2017 the Peshawar High Court asked victims of the custom to contact the police or armed forces for relief.

Sang-e-Mah is the sequel to 2016's Sang-e-Mar Mar which starred Khan, Saeed, Ijaz and Zulfiqar. The story of the upcoming drama serial follows a family belonging to the tribal areas of Pakistan and their traditional values that are prioritised over love and even their lives.
