The internet has blessed us with Euro 2020 final memes and here are some of our favourites
The internet is having a ball after England's football team lost to the Italians in the final match of the UEFA European Football Championship final match.
The championship brings Europe's top national teams together to contest the title. This time around, Italy beat England 3 -2 on penalties after the final ended on a draw. Many are jubilant at Italy's win — or rather England's loss — and they've taken to the internet to share memes that deepen their sense of satisfaction. We've compiled a few of our favourites (and explained them a little) for your viewing pleasure.
Fans and supporters of the English team began to tout their much-loved 'it's coming home' slogan before the final match. The slogan — taken from the song 'Three Lions (Football's Coming Home)' by David Baddiel, Frank Skinner and the Lightning Seeds — became popular to express the wish for England to "bring home" the winner's title from a major football tournament, something they haven't done since 1966.
Many a meme popped up when it became obvious that England was not in fact bringing the trophy home.
The moment when Italy's captain Giorgio Chiellini pulled down England's Saka during the final was also turned into a meme. Chiellini has widely received criticism for the move.
Meghan Markle somehow made her way into the conversation as well and we applaud the creative take on a completely random and unrelated person being brought into the mix. Apparently the Italians like Meghan Markle more than the English ever did since her marriage to Prince Harry.
Some shade was also thrown by Italians for introducing pineapple to pizza. Not sure if the English were the first to use the fruit as a topping but we're definitely siding with the Italians on this undesired combo.
Prince William, Kate Middleton and their son George also spectated the match from the stands. They clearly weren't happy with the outcome of the match — and the internet loved the reaction.
People are clearly still angry about England's ruthless history of colonialism and the memes are there to prove it. The English forcibly occupied the Indian subcontinent for more than a 100 years.
There's some darker humour from Pakistan.
Someone asked back for the Kohinoor diamond as well. The diamond, which is part of the crown of Britain's reigning monarch, originated in India and was taken by British colonisers. Many in India and Pakistan have lobbied for the diamond to be brought back to the subcontinent since independence from the British in 1947.
Better luck next time team England. Maybe one day the winner's trophy truly will come home but we'll just savour the memes till then.
