Bollywood director Sanjay Leela Bhansali tests positive for Covid-19

Strict social isolation orders may have been eased, but the pandemic isn't over yet.

The latest name from the entertainment industry to have contracted the coronavirus is Bollywood director Sanjay Leela Bhansali — who was currently shooting for his upcoming film Gangubai Kathiawadi in Mumbai’s Goregaon Film City. The film stars Alia Bhatt.

“Sanjay Leela Bhansali has tested positive for Covid-19, and he is under self quarantine. Alia too has quarantined herself since he and Ranbir have both tested positive. Everybody who has come in contact with Sanjay have taken the test,” a source close to the film confirmed to Indian Express.

“After Sanjay tested positive, the first thing he did was to get his mother tested too. She has tested negative for for the virus and is doing fine but she has also quarantined herself as a precautionary measure," the source added.

The film is Bhansali's 10th as a director and was expected to release on July 30. The story revolves on the life of Gangubai Kothewali, the madam of a brothel in Kamathipura, and is based on a chapter of Hussain Zaidi's book Mafia Queens Of Mumbai.

Gangubai’s son Babuji Rawji Shah had registered a case against the filmmaker and Bhatt, feeling that certain portions of the story were defamatory and an infringement upon his right to privacy, self-respect and liberty.
