Cake earns over 4 crore in first week

Asim Abbasi's family drama Cake has injected some fresh energy into the Pakistani box office, with earnings of 4.2 crore in the first week of its running.

The film, which stars Aamina Sheikh, Sanam Saeed and Adnan Malik, has earned 2 crores locally and 2.2 crores overseas, confirms the distributors Footprint Entertainment.

Director Asim Abbasi says he expects the film to earn more in the coming weeks, for Cake will release in USA and Canada on April 13.

Speaking to Images, Abbasi said, "This was not a big budget film, it was a contained production. Have we broken even yet? No, but we are remaining positive because the film has yet to release in North America. But from what we're hearing, in local cinemas all the evening shows have been sold out and we're hoping the momentum will carry through this weekend as well.'

The film continues to show strong performance over its second weekend with heavy bookings in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad, according to Footprint. A representative attributed its success so far to positive word of mouth.
