'Gangs Of Wasseypur' makes a comeback on Netflix

Remember Anurag Kashyap’s enthralling crime thriller Gangs Of Wasseypur? The movie, which gained cult classic status in a short time, is now coming to online video streaming site, Netflix in the first week of December.

Both the films, Gangs of Wasseypur and its sequel, will be split up into four parts each and then made into an eight-episode mini-series.

The series will also be broadcast with subtitles in English, Spanish, Chinese, French, and Arabic.

While addressing a panel Monday at the Film Bazaar in Goa, which discussed "new boundaries in content creation, marketing and monetizing," Kashyap said that the first of its kind attempt at presenting the movie as a series on Netflix "reflects how digital distribution can play a role in expanding a film's audience after its theatrical release."

Taneja is in talks with the film’s international sales company, Paris-based Elle Driver, to buy out territories where the five-and-a-half-hour film doesn’t have a theatrical distributor to deploy a similar strategy. The 2012 film screened at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, Sundance and many other festivals.

Film Karavan has also sold a package of 20 Indian indie films to Netflix for global distribution. The package, which includes titles such as Fandry, Amal, Patang, Loins Of Punjab and Crossing Bridges, will be subtitled into Spanish, French, Arabic and Chinese for global release. Irrfan Khan and Deepika Padukone's starrer Piku has also been sold to Netflix to be streamed in January.

Taneja added that B-Town films are now being subtitled into multiple languages for their vast reach globally.

Also, digital streaming saves the censorship trouble problematic back at home: "The other advantage of a web series is that we do not need to deal with obnoxious censorship and we have creative freedom." said Kashyap.
