The internet celebrates as the US is knocked out after a controversial run at the World Cup
Belgium’s Red Devils knocked the US out of the FIFA World Cup in a 4-1 thrashing on Jul 7, making a lot of people online very, very happy.
In a tournament where the host country’s run has been marked by complaints of foreign teams, staff and referees being mistreated and allegations of political pressure to bend the rules of the game, fans around the world are celebrating the result.
In the lead-up to the match, US President Donald Trump had gotten FIFA to overturn a red card given to striker Folarin Balogun. The outcry about the “rigging” was immense and the Belgians were first to say they were playing to keep the game fair.
Fans weren’t too far behind and they brought their meme game with them.
Many people took digs at American sports fans, who only seemed to care about what they insist on calling soccer as long as they were hosting the World Cup. Some even poked fun at themselves.
The loss has also — hopefully — put an end to Americans insisting people call it soccer instead of football. The Devils led the charge on that one too.
With the Belgians having cleared the Round of 16, they now move to the quarter finals where they will face Spain on July 11.
The US exit now leaves defending champs Argentina as the last team from the Western hemisphere. They will be facing Egypt in their Round of 16 draw today (July 7). All teams that have moved on to the quarter finals have so far been from Europe, with one notable exception — Morocco.
