The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has summoned TV actress and model Momina Iqbal and a Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) lawmaker on Thursday (today) after her allegations of online harassment and death threats purportedly issued by the ruling party’s MPA went viral on Wednesday.

“We have summoned both Momina Iqbal and the PML-N MPA concerned for Thursday (May 21) after receiving her application. The matter will be decided strictly on merit,” NCCIA Punjab head Muhammad Ali Waseem said on Wednesday.

A source told Dawn that the NCCIA moved swiftly after Momina’s social media appeal went viral and drew the attention of senior PML-N leadership, especially Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

“The party’s top leadership directed the NCCIA to immediately entertain the model’s complaint and initiate action against the ruling party MPA if the allegations are proven,” the source said and added the chief minister office also wanted to clear its name following Momina’s allegations against it.

In her online post, tagged to the PML-N leadership, Momina alleged that she had been subjected to “online harassment, cyberbullying, and death threats for a long time.”

She claimed that both she and her family had suffered severe mental stress and trauma because of the alleged conduct of the MPA, whose identity she did not disclose publicly.

“A member of the provincial assembly belonging to the PML-N has been threatening me for an extended period. I repeatedly reported the matter to the NCCIA and the Federal Investigation Agency, but no action was taken,” she stated.

“Instead of ensuring justice, attempts were allegedly made to suppress my complaints. Even individuals associated with the office of the chief minister tried to discourage me and silence the issue rather than allowing a fair investigation,” she further claimed.

Momina urged the authorities to conduct an impartial inquiry, ensure protection for her family, and initiate strict legal action against all those allegedly involved. She warned that if the matter continued to be ignored, she would be compelled to hold a press conference and present “all available evidence” regarding the alleged harassment, threats, and efforts to suppress her complaints in order to shield a political figure.

This sanitising of news is confusing and a disservice to your readers. The lady has been clearly identified. Why is the harasser being screened?

It is extremely discouraging that the victim is being made the center of attention, while the harasser is being protected. Dawn could do a bit of investigating and produce a balanced report?

NCCIA does not possess technical knowledge to solve these matters. They would only try to patch up between parties and would earn money from parties.

The Punjab Chief Minister, by now must be aware of the name of harasser and should disclose herself the name, to support her claim of being strictly against the female harassment under her rule.
