Celebrities rally behind Fawad Khan amid criticism over Pakistan Idol judging role

Playback singer Humaira Arshad said, 'judging musical talent requires years of training, ' without acknowledging Khan's past as a singer in Entity Paradigm.

Fawad Khan’s presence on the judging panel of Pakistan Idol season 2 alongside Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Bilal Maqsood, and Zeb Bangash has become a point of contention due to a younger demographic unfamiliar with his work as the lead singer in one of the most popular bands of the 2000s, and now, remarks from former playback singer Humaira Arshad.

Speaking during an interview on Suno TV’s Suno Tou Sahi, Arshad weighed in on the criticism online about Khan, arguing that individuals without formal musical training should not be evaluating aspiring singers.

“Judging musical talent requires years of training and deep understanding of vocals and technique,” Arshad said. She suggested that celebrities who know they lack this expertise should decline such roles, and warned that show organisers often prioritise star power and sponsor influence over authenticity. “If a contestant were to ask them to demonstrate a classical taan, they simply wouldn’t be able to do it. How can someone who cannot sing evaluate those who can?” she added.

Khan’s colleagues, however, were quick to point out that he began his artistic journey in Entity Paradigm (EP) before rising to international fame as an actor. Actor Durefishan Saleem reshared a video by influencer Bilal Hassan, who suggested that criticism of Khan reflects a national tendency to feel threatened by globally celebrated Pakistanis, from Malala Yousafzai to Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

Saleem added, “Healthy critique is part of the business, but being overly critical of your own people isn’t progress; it’s disgrace.”

Actor Nameer Khan also spoke up, urging the nation to celebrate achievements rather than pull people down. “Fawad Khan is a star, and he owes no one an explanation,” he wrote on social media.

Singer and actor Haroon Shahid joined the chorus on X, calling the debate “stupid” and highlighting Khan’s musical credentials. “The fact that she doesn’t know about Fawad and Bilal Bhai as musicians is the really alarming thing in all of this. This season of the Idol is doing well, and we’ll see all these people craving for attention. I love the panel. All bases covered,” he tweeted.

Arshad’s comments, while critical of a global franchise, come across as rather harsh and dismissive, especially given Khan’s proven musical background with Entity Paradigm. By focusing on the supposed lack of qualifications rather than acknowledging the diverse expertise a panel can bring, her remarks read less like constructive criticism and more like sour grapes.

A more measured approach could have been to highlight the value of trained musicians on judging panels while still recognising that experience in performance, stage presence, and industry insight — qualities Khan possesses — also bring credibility and perspective. In essence, she could have turned her critique into a thoughtful discussion rather than a blunt dismissal.

As Pakistan Idol continues to air, perhaps we need to focus on the value of diverse perspectives and remind each other that Khan’s dual career as a musician and actor brings a unique lens to judging emerging talent.

Fawad is a bona fide star. But he isn't good enough of a singer to judge technical signing. Period.

Unfortunately Pakistanis love to pull each other down - you can see it around the world - other nationalities help their fellow men - Pakistanis stab them in the back

Pakistani idle is not about classical singing or understanding. Classical singing, you need a good ear understanding of the music, familiar with variety of different music. And then appreciat it criticism . is wrong. As long as he understands the music, he is a good judge.

Those who feel they are immensely more talented than Fawad Khan also must have the talent to convince some channel to let them have their own show. Otherwise just shut up and let us enjoy the show that so far has been far superior the earlier season.

Beyond good vocals, a singer should possess qualities like emotional expression, stage presence, and strong technique. Emotional expression conveys a story, while stage presence engages the audience through confidence and charisma. Technical skills include breath support, pitch control, and clear diction, which allow for a powerful and understandable performance Fawad Khan is a master in these attributes. His presence in the show makes it outstanding.

I mean yes he was is EP, but that doesn't answer the question she raised. Did he get years of training in classical music and singing/raag before/during/after his time in EP? I'm all for celebrating achievements, but this is a valid question.

i was a fan of Fawad Khan... but no more now. this is called brotherhood mafia. Pakistan is infested with mafias, taking stand for their kith & kin. How diffcult is it to understand that a person with no or very low level of knowledge cannot judge the new aspirants who have acheived some degree of excellence in their work. this will only lead to nepotisim, some thing which Pakistani society thrives on. Shame on people who are quick to talk about stands for society but fail to do so when it comes to themselves. Humaira Arshad has correctly and daringly pointed out this anamoly. The management of the program Pakistan Idol is also part of this shamless nepotisim

It is not surprising to see one Pakistani disgracing other Pakistani on public forum. The main problem of our people is jealousy. If Humaira Arshad was part of the judges panel along side with Fawad Khan, I can assure you she would have been praising about his judges capabilities. I do not remember if I saw any other singer coming on main TV channel and bad mouthing about other judges on American Idol or Indian Idol which have been in the run for a long time. Not sure when we as Pakistanis will start respecting and supporting each other. I hope in near future!!

Apart from thorough musicians, there are listeners who have knowledge to appreciate delicacies of the real music. If not, we would never see real musicians. Sorry to say, we have lost the ears to differentiate between real music and the organized noise!

Why are we paying so much attention to Humaira Arshad who mistakes screaming for singing. Why can’t ppl leave our own alone and let something happy and entertaining happen without below the belt remarks? # ignore Humaira Arshad please

Once the talent pool is established (chosen by the judges), doesn’t the public vote on who the winners are? It’s doubtful that millions of voters are professionally trained musicians. So silly to have this debate. Appreciation of arts doesn’t come from training, if it did there wouldn’t be any musicians known to the world. Don’t know what planet Ms.Arshad lives on, but here are the singers that fill up stadiums and sell millions of albums with zero vocal or music training before becoming world famous: Bob Dylan, Shakira, Jimi Hendrix, Lady Gaga, only to name a few. This made up controversy appears nothing but a case of jealousy and insecurity.
