Human Rights Watch refuses to accept donations from Aziz Ansari, other comedians part of Saudi festival

The nonprofit issued a statement after Ansari said he would donate a portion of the fee he received at the Riyadh Comedy Festival to it.

Human Rights Watch (HRW), a New York-based nonprofit advocating against human rights violations across the world, said it can not accept donations from comedians who performed at the Riyadh Comedy Festival, Variety reported on Friday.

The rights watchdog clarified its position on the controversial Saudi festival after comedian Aziz Ansari said he would donate a part of the fee he was given by the Saudi government to causes he believed in, mentioning HRW and Reporters Without Borders as potential recipients. Ansari was one of several big names at the festival, which ran from September 26 to October 9, including Bill Burr, Dave Chappelle, Louis CK and Pete Davidson.

Joey Shea, HRW’s researcher on Saudi Arabia, said, “Aziz Ansari and other comedians have generously offered to donate part of their performance fees to rights groups like Human Rights Watch,” adding, “but while we cannot accept, it is not too late for them to call for the release of detained Saudi activists”.

Arvind Ganesan, head of economic justice and rights at HRW, told Variety they were critical of Ansari and other performers in Riyadh, refusing their donations as accepting their money may be seen as compromising on the organisation’s principles. He said they had not been not been approached for any such donations so far.

Ansari was earlier questioned by fellow comic Jimmy Kimmel, who asked why he would perform for “a pretty brutal regime”. Ansari said he had put a lot of thought into the decision and felt his performance could start some positive conversations.

Saudi Arabia, which has been trying to present a softer image to the world in recent years by loosening its restrictions on women, entertainment and sport, has long been known for having a dismal human rights record.

In 2018, the world was shocked by the murder of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. US intelligence later revealed the kingdom’s powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman green-lit the killing.

The country has also been criticised for other human rights violations. In May, HRW warned that the kingdom was subjecting workers to inhumane conditions in the lead up to the 2034 World Cup. A United Nations forum in December saw activists assail the Saudi state for brutal suppression of dissent.

It is no different than the tourists and expats (including Muslims) that flock to Dubai, the Gulf region, fans going to Qatar, people ignoring Saudi widely documented human rights violations and blatant corruption and going there to for religious pilgrimage, Ronaldo accepting job for the Saudi football team in Saudi Arabia, celebrities (Nicki Minaj, Jennifer Lopez etc) performing in Saudi Arabia etc It's selective outrage, tacit approval and complicity. But good that HRW has the courage to decline different nations due to moral integrity.

Come on now, what about the multinationals in Saudi Arabia, are you going to boycott them as well, stop taking principled stance on these comedians, they were probably just trying to to do their job to help open up the closed society

The US itself violates human rights and kills hundreds of thousends of innocent people arround the world. Why criticize Saudi Arabia instead of criticizing their own first?

It’s funny how HRW would call Saudi out for human rights violations but stay quiet at terrorist Israel for the genocide that killed hundreds of thousands of civilians in occupied Palestine.

You feel totally at ease and totally safe going out on the streets and shopping areas at any time of day or night. Whereas in most cities in US,your so -called HRW is blown to bits and tatters within half an hour of venturing out even in broad daylight in most of US and some EU cities by getting mugged and beaten or even killed if you dare refuse to hand over your precious belongings. SO MUCH FOR AMERICA'S AND EU'S HUMAN RIGHHTS WATCH. BETTER WATCH YOUR OWN DIRTY BACKYARD AS A PRIORITY IF YOU CARE FOR IT.

@Khushi How do you know they don't? Why do we zealously and manically criticise certain western foreign governments, burn and stomp on their flags but fail to criticize and protest our own or even fellow Eastern governments like the Saudis and China (two major human rights violators whom we relied on for loans)? There is no winning with you people. If they accept donations, they are foreign funded. If they don't, then they are being hypocritical. Pick one. You can't have it both ways.

@Amer Yes. Just like Pakistan has no moral scruples about accepting foreign aid from the same US and later lamenting the same foreign funding. Apparently that's ok too. US citizens are not a homogenous lump but comprise american Muslims, humanitarians, human rights activists, philanthropists, celebrities, charities etc from different ethnical, religious, political, socioeconomic background. Your illogical statement is equivalent to viewing Pakistani citizens donations (zakat, chanda etc) as condoning terrorism.

@AA Moosavi Not sure what your point is, but human rights organisations (including HRW, Amnesty, B'Tselem (Palestine/Israel), MENA Rights Group (Middle East), Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) etc are non-profit, non political and independent organisations, NGOs and they are not monitored by any government. They are funded by private donors, individual people (like you and me) as well as charities, foundations etc. Will it milden your your scepticism to know that HRW is considered an anti Israeli organisation due to their criticism of Israels human rights violations?
