‘Pure cinema’ — Gen Z can’t believe Pakistan’s UN ambassador told Israel it has no friends

Pakistan's ambassador to the United Nations told the security council Israel doesn't heed advice 'even from its friends, if it has any left'.
13 Sep, 2025

Make way for Ambassador Asim Iftikhar, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations, who has become a hero to Pakistanis online after delivering a cool but devastating response to Israeli allegations at a session of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Thursday. The emergency session, convened at the request of Pakistan and Somalia, saw all 15 members of the UNSC — including the United States — and aggrieved Qatar bash Israel for violating the Gulf state’s sovereignty.

Hoping to score a point amidst all the criticism, Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon called out the double standard of celebrating certain countries acting against terrorists abroad, notably the US killing Osama bin Laden in Pakistan, while admonishing Israel for attacking Hamas leaders in Doha. Ambassador Iftikhar requested the council president to grant him a right to reply and went on to thoroughly thrash Israel for five and a half minutes.

He questioned whether his Israeli counterpart had listened attentively to what was being said in the chamber and remarked it was “ludicrous for an aggressor, an occupier [and] a serial violator of the UN charter and international law, [Israel], to abuse this chamber”. The ambassador lamented that Israel “does not heed to any advice, even from its friends, if it has any left”.

As the ambassador’s words were heard loud and clear in the council and similar statements were made by other delegates, Pakistanis on X were all praises for their representative. Several users, especially Gen Z ones, said they were proud of Pakistan’s stance and how it was delivered.

Netizens celebrated how Pakistan roasted Israel at the UNSC, with one saying we should “forget cricket and hockey, roasting should be our national sport”.

One user, talking about what just happened to the Israeli delegation, said, “there’s beating someone up, there’s dragging someone and then beating them up and then there’s dragging someone a good distance and beating them up after”.

Being the star of the moment, Ambassador Iftikhar received a generous heaping of praise for his words and was bestowed with a couple of titles by netizens.

While the UNSC agreed to censure Israel on Thursday over its attack on Qatar, progress on a ceasefire in Gaza remains elusive as at least 64,368 people have been killed since October 2023 by the Israeli Defence Forces. A resolution calling for an independent Palestinian state was adopted in the UN General Assembly (UNGA) on Friday with the US and Israel being two of 10 countries in opposition to the measure. France and the United Kingdom are also expected to recognise a Palestinian state during this session of the UNGA, which opened on September 9.

Israel doesn't care. If it did it would stop. It lost all moral compass. Israel only listened, because we have nuclear weapons. They could easily the tables on us because we are no less of an aggressive towards our own inside our own borders. That said, its ironic how Pakistanis are praising Iftikhar, but Palestinians/Arabs are not. They only seem to care when support, protest comes from "whites", westerners/Americans/Europeans. The very people whose governments have been enabling, arming or funding Israel. They never quite seem to appreciate Pakistans unwavering support through 7 decades and our contributions. It's also interesting that Pakistan and Somalia of all countries requested this session. I guess the Arab countries were busy with something more important than fellow Arab lives.

Much Ado About Nothing. To think that Israel is isolated is wishful thinking. They have been hitting counties across middle east at will and the criticism of Israel has not made any diffrence. America and the West has been behind them , so no harm will come to them. They will continue to hit muslim umah with impunity. Mind you once they are finished with Gaza , they will start anew with other new targets which may include Pakistan. Pakistan is too close to China and India does not like this relationship. India . America , Israel together will long term play a role in this region to balance

In an interview Imran Khan had said "Absolutely not" and came the regime change. Are Pakistanis ready to face a backlash from Israel and United States?

After listening to the Pakistani ambassador's speech I was shell shocked to read how people are praising him left and right. I seriously think he could have done a much better job as he really did not live up to the expectations that I have from an ambassador. Unfortunately he is not fit for the job as his speech was slow paced and slurred. In this day and age one has to speak swiftly, clearly, loudly and in a fast paced tone with the least amount of accent and pauses as possible so that the audience would not loose interest. No one in this day and age has time to listen to such a slow placed speech which lacks bold tone and punches. Seriously I could have done a much better job than this and I really mean it.

تم تکلف کو بھی اخلاص سمجھتے ہو فرازؔ دوست ہوتا نہیں ہر ہاتھ ملانے والا Faraz, you mistake formality for intimacy/ Not all those who shake hands with you, are friends The Israeli delegation must have looked at the 5 permanent member, China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and recited the above verse. I think you have forgotten 1971 Mr. Iftikhar, you are here only for 2 years.

Israel is strongly supported by US, UK and the west. It is foolish to assume that they have no friends. India also is their friend. Many middle eastern countries are also their friends. Whereas Pakistan has very few friends. Only Turkey, Malaysia are known friends. Though China used to be a good friend, now after Pakistan drifted to US, they are probably not considering Pakistan as friends. US cannot be considered a friend.

Well it is sad to learn that there are a few diehard PTI fans who are saying that "Words don't matter, action should be taken / I could have delivered a fast-paced speech (like it is a cricket match) & so on... Had this argument / speech been made by their beloved PTI founder, they'd be flying high above the sky... This very leader delivered a speech at UN a few years ago and they got mad as they had conquered Mars... They just cherry pick the stuff and manoeuvre the facts for their suitability... Such a hypocrite cult...

@Imran Qureshi, My, my.. such arrogance! "I could have done a much better job". Really? He's the Ambassador of Pakistan and you are ... nobody, perhaps a Youtuber? This is the UN, a body of some 200 different nations, ethnicities, cultures and native accents. What did you expect?? Even American Ambassador has an accent. And if she was from the south, she could sound like 'Howdy". From the East Coast, perhaps from New Joycie.,'Haw u dhoing" So put your money where your mouth is, and produce some Youtube videos on how foreign Ambassadors should speak, deliver speech with punch lines and how loud they should be, while sounding like a Californian or English gentleman! Get a life!!

Pakistan's Foreign Minister, Zulfikar All Bhutto, his face streaked with tears, walked out of the Security Council that day after accusing UN security council of “legalizing aggression.” Outside the chamber, he said: “I hate this body. I don't want to see their faces again. I'd rather go back to a destroyed Pakistan.” Isreal does not have to remind us of the words of ZA Bhutto; this body is here to legalize aggression. I would rather boycott the session rather than making empty speeches. I think all these spineless speeches in the United Nations is an effort of making a "Naya Pakistan ". From Imran Khan to now Mr. Asim Iftikhar should remember the golden words of your successors. •گھر میں نہیں دانے امّاں چلیں بھنانے
