The faces of Operation Sindoor make their rather strange Kaun Banega Crorepati debut

In a promo for its upcoming episode, Amitabh Bachchan welcomes the women to the show for some good old fashioned propaganda.
13 Aug, 2025

For years, Kaun Banega Crorepati wasn’t just another TV quiz show — it was a shared cultural space for audiences across Pakistan and India, who tuned in to watch Amitabh Bachchan quiz contestants under the bright lights. In its latest Independence Day special promo, the show has traded that universal appeal for a front row seat to India’s nationalist spectacle, featuring the two women who became the faces of Operation Sindoor.

The promo sees Big B warmly welcoming Colonel Sofiya Qureshi of the Indian Army, Wing Commander Vyomika Singh of the Indian Air Force and Commander Prerna Deosthalee of the Indian Navy to the hot seat.

They’re in full uniform, recounting the May airstrikes on six sites in Pakistan, including Sialkot, Bahawalpur and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, as part of India’s Operation Sindoor launched in response to the deadly Pahalgam attack for which India blames Pakistan — an accusation Pakistan has repeatedly denied.

“Pakistan had been doing this for years. A response was necessary, which is why Operation Sindoor was planned,” said Qureshi with dramatic flair. “From 1:05am to 1:30am, we ended their game,” added Singh, according to The Indian Express. Deosthalee assured viewers that “targets were destroyed and no civilians were harmed,” before Qureshi closed with the punchline: “This is a new India, with a new mindset.”

The audience answered with chants of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” (Hail mother India).

Missing from the promo, of course, is Pakistan’s side of the story. According to the ISPR, the strikes killed 31 people and injured 57, including women and children. Pakistan not only denied involvement in the Pahalgam attack but also condemned the violation of its sovereignty. The ISPR said it shot down 25 Indian drones in the wake of the strikes, and celebrities here slammed the loss of civilian life and the insensitivity of celebrating it on TV and social media.

The backlash to the promo in India has been loud. Many questioned why serving officers were appearing in uniform on a quiz show and whether this was in line with military rules.

Others accused the Modi government of using the armed forces as props, turning the country’s most recognisable TV stage into another platform for political messaging.

“This BJP-led GOI has managed to ruin everything this country took real pride in,” one X user wrote. Another called it “beyond cringe”.

Others saw it as tokenism dressed up as empowerment. “Why is the Defence Ministry permitting this?” one poster asked. Another suggested the women had little to do with the operation itself — “save reading out notes given to them” — and accused the government of selling “imaginary victories” 90 days after the fact.

The show’s decision to air the episode on August 15 leaves little doubt about its symbolic timing, just as the Modi regime leans harder into anti-Pakistan sentiment to cement its nationalist narrative.

As a political move, it’s quite funny and, as many critics have called it, “cringe”. Why in the world are we seeing serving military officers on a game show to defend the armed forces’ actions?

For years, Kaun Banega Crorepati stood apart from the noise of politics — a quiz show where knowledge was the star, not the state. Now, it’s a reminder that under the current climate, even cultural spaces that once crossed borders with ease can be pulled into the service of power.

The battlefield may be hundreds of miles away, but in Modi’s India, propaganda finds its prime-time slot.

i wouldn't be surprised if we find these 'cheerleaders' of indian army and air force turn up in the show attired in designer sarees or lehngas in military camouflage colors and patterns and it again won't surprise me if they reveal the wonders done by their forces while dancing and singing on the tune of 'choli kay peechey kia hay"

I hope this wakes some ghairat in Pakistani artists who continue to work and aspire to work in that country. I won't blame the people because as the VCR generation of the 80's we are addicted to Bollywood. That too could have been avoided if our own entertainment and film industry were nurtured. Rather it was subjected to censorship to freedom of thought and topics under the state media.

The name,"Operation Sindoor" glorifies the widow of the Indian Navy officer killed in the terror attack. Although the widow was deprived of her Sindoor in Maang, but Modi was happy to name his failed cowardly attack as a still existing against all accustoms of Sindoor. That simply turned the whole saga to boomerang as an "Operation Kafoor'" back to Zalim Modi, on which the poor widow was silenced on her protests.

Can anyone in Pakistan post such messages on social media criticizing their Army or Establishment? Just curious Overwhelm Pakistani believe that only India suffered losses but Pakistan did not? Is that possible in war. Even mighty USA suffered casualties in war with Somalia and Afghanistan, militarily primitive nations when compared to military might of USA. Hollywood movies have been made on American Casualties. Even during 1971 war, Pakistan had captured Indian Soldiers.

I am 94 now and moved from Rawalpindi in August 12, 1947 to India. Our Muslim neighbors were very good and helpful. No religion teaches hatred but only few bigots spread poison. Now politics on both the countries have been spreading this poison. I was in Rawalpindi at the time of partition. Our Muslim fiends helped us in moving to India on August 12, 1947. Thankfully now I am in America and live peacefully.

@Multani Because India is home to other religious communities and not just Hindu or Sikh. 1/6 (or so) of India is Muslim. They are Muslim Indians hence they serve their country like other citizens. You should probably study history of Subcontinent and understand it's diversity. While Pakistan is mostly Muslim (albeit most by name only), you will find, we also have other religious communities such as Hindu, Christian minorities. Some of them served in politics, courts and army. Such as fighter pilot Cecil Chaudhry. Recently an American New Yorker Muslim policeman was killed and his funeral attended by the police force, politicians etc. He was given a police funeral wrapped in the American flag. Dont you think he ever had to come face to face Muslim criminals? Yet his did his duty. The point is you serve your country. Qureshi's country is India.

@ KASHIF RAZA There was no Aerial Battle between Pakistan and Indian Airforce. The fact is that neither Airforce crossed their borders. As far as Rafael’s being brought down was indirectly acknowledged by Indian Generals. But they did not answer how many? To best my understanding, all pilots were safe and ejected. Rafael down is NO BIG DEAL for India who have over $650 Billions cash in their Forex Reserve. The issue here is how much losses Pakistan suffered in this ‘War’ which as per Indians is not over yet. As I said, even mighty USA suffers losses in their military adventures when fighting even militarily primitive nations like Somalia and Afghanistan. Pakistan did complain in UN that Indians attacked its military installations. Will you answer what are the Losses Pakistan suffered in this ‘WAR’. If no Loss then Why Pakistan agreed to CEASEFIRE? If Pakistan was winning then why Pakistan did not Force India to resume Water Treaty?
