Friday is getting freakier! Freakier Friday, the sequel to the hit 2003 film Freaky Friday, is coming to the big screen on August 8, Disney announced.

In case you’ve lived under a rock for over two decades, Freaky Friday followed a mother-daughter duo, constantly at odds with each other until one day they switch bodies and quite literally have to walk in the other person’s shoes. The film starred Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis in the lead roles, as well as the noughts’ favourite heartthrob Chad Michael Murray.

We hope all the 90s and 00s kids are ready for this mega-throwback, because not only did Disney announce the release date, it dropped the teaser trailer for the film too. Tess (Curtis) and Anna (Lohan) are told by a palmist that their “lifelines have intersected before” and that the lesson they learnt may “serve them again”. And so the plot thickens, as up-and-coming pop icon Chappell Roan’s ‘HOT TO GO’ thumps in the background.

However, dear reader, don’t forget! Friday is now freakier and the trailer shows that it’s not two people switching bodies but four. The other two are Anna’s own daughter and soon to be step-daughter.

According to a press release from The Walt Disney Company, the sequel features a “multigenerational twist,” with the film continuing many years after Tess and Anna originally swapped bodies. Tess and Anna navigate the challenges that come with merging two families and “discover that lightning might indeed strike twice.”

The sequel will feature a four-way body swap as Anna, Tess and Anna’s daughter and step-daughter all wake up in different bodies, Variety reported.

Within 14 hours of its release, the teaser trailer amassed over two million views on YouTube and 13.9 million on Instagram — needless to say, everyone is excited.

Returning cast members from the original film include Murray, Mark Harmon, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao.

They are joined by Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons, Manny Jacinto, and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan.

The film is directed by Nisha Ganatra.
