Indian composer Pritam is harbouring no ill-feelings after fans alleged that K-pop singer Jennie’s new song ‘Like Jennie’ sounded similar to the Pritam-composed ‘Rani’ theme song from Bollywood film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.

In an Instagram post, the maestro of Bollywood music said minor similarities were bound to happen in music. “Rani and Jennie are names that rhyme, so a similar flow in one phrase doesn’t make it a copy.”

Pritam insisted that fans look at the bigger picture instead of focusing on tiny details. He said, “In today’s interconnected world, where artists share the same platforms, no one is deliberately trying to copy someone else’s work.

“Creating a song takes immense effort, and if an artist truly resonates with an idea, they can simply collaborate.”

According to Pritam, music is all about creativity, unique artistic perspective, influence and sometimes pure coincidence, “especially when artists exist on the same creative wavelength.”

He wished the K-pop star the best for her new album Ruby and said, “Rather than tearing artists down, celebrating their work makes far more sense.”

Pritam’s message of peace comes after the internet was up in arms after Jennie, a member of the K-pop supergroup BLACKPINK, dropped a snippet from her song. Shortly after, allegations started flying that ‘Like Jennie’ was a rip-off of ‘Rani’, the theme song Alia Bhatt makes her entrance to in Karan Johar’s Rocky aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.

Social media was flooded with comparisons to the ‘Rani’ theme, highlighting the similarities, such as the chorus chanting “Rani” and “Jennie”. Others, however, joked about the irony of Jennie allegedly stealing from Pritam, who has been called out many times for copying music from others.

‘Like Jennie’ is the second track on Jennie’s highly-anticipated solo debut album that released on Friday.

Well said Pritam. Pakistani musicians and filmmakers, who always keep on levelling allegations of plagiarism day in and out against their Indian counterparts, should take note of his solemn response.
