Trigger warning: This story contains mentions of suicide

Bollywood veteran Amitabh Bachchan’s son-in-law, Nikhil Nanda, has been accused of fraud and abetment to suicide in a case filed against him and others in Uttar Pradesh’s Badaun district, Indian media reported.

Nanda is the grandson of Bollywood actor Raj Kapoor and married Amitabh’s daughter Shweta Bachchan in 1997.

Nanda, who serves as the chairperson and managing director of Escorts Kubota, an agricultural machinery company, was accused of pressuring businessperson Jitendra Singh into ending his life, Bollywood Hungama reported.

According to the complaint filed by Singh’s brother, the business tycoon and other employees from his company started pressuring Singh to meet sales targets. Singh, who ran a tractor dealership in Dataganj, was allegedly threatened with the revocation of his dealership licence and that his property would be put up for auction, according to India Today.

The publication reported that Singh was unable to deal with the pressure and had shared his concerns with his family, often discussing the harassment he was facing.

On November 21, officials visited Singh’s dealership again and a day later, he committed suicide, his brother said. He alleged that the police did not take any action, despite a complaint being filed.

A formal case was registered against Nanda and others, including employees from Escorts Kubota, based on a court order, Bollywood Hungama reported. The accused parties face charges of fraud, intimidation, and abetment to suicide.

Nanda and the Bachchan family have not released official statements regarding the allegations.
