Netflix under fire for casting Israeli actor to play the Virgin Mary in upcoming biblical drama

X users criticised the predominantly white, Israeli cast as Palestinian Christians are attacked by the Israeli state.

Netflix is facing severe backlash after releasing the trailer for its biblical drama Mary, which stars several Israeli actors, including Noa Cohen playing the titular role.

Slated for a December 6 release, Netflix said the movie offered a fresh perspective on the representation of Jesus’ birth, “through the eyes of Mary”.

According to Middle East Eye, the film chronicles Jesus’ birth, Mary’s journey as an unwed mother facing societal rejection and King Herod’s — played by Anthony Hopkins — murderous hunt to track them down, fearing a threat to his rule.

The cast includes several other Israeli actors, such as Ido Tako, who depicts Joseph, Ori Pfeffer, Mili Avital, Keren Tzur and Hilla Vidor.

The trailer drew criticism from audiences, who accused the streaming giant of erasing the characters’ Palestinian roots and casting predominantly white actors in a story set in the Middle East.

‘Everybody white’

Ironic, insensitive, disgusting audacity

Many X (formerly Twitter) users called out the irony of casting Israelis in a movie about Mary and Jesus, while the state of Israel committed horrific atrocities against Christian Palestinians in the birthplace of Jesus himself.

“While Israel bombs churches and settlers harass Christians in Jerusalem and Bethlehem, Netflix thought it would be a great idea to choose an Israeli with an Instagram face to portray Virgin Mary,” a netizen wrote.

Other social media users highlighted that the casting of an “outspoken Zionist” to play Mary did not make sense while “Israel actively eradicates the oldest Christian population on Earth”.

One person called it “deeply blasphemous” to cast an Israeli as Mary while “Israel is carrying out a genocide against Palestinians, killing some of the oldest Christian populations in the area and destroying their heritage sites.”

Another user pointed out that it was okay to cast a Jewish individual as Mary, who many claim was Jewish. However, choosing an Israeli for the role “when Israel is currently bombing the oldest Christian community in the world is just wrong [and] insensitive.”

Historical inaccuracies

People also mentioned the inaccuracies depicted in the trailer, with one X user claiming that the Bible did not mention that Mary was barren, nor did anyone start riots against her when she was pregnant.

“The actors and actresses are Israelis and not an ounce of melanin can be seen in the trailer.”

Another user said the movie was “violent erasure” because “historically Mary was a Jewish Palestinian woman”.

They added that in Christianity, “so many records of her miracles are her literally appearing to children in times of war. So just symbolically what an insult to cast an ‘Israeli.’”

Ensure authenticity

Meanwhile, the film’s director, DJ Caruso, described the film as a “coming of age” story about a “smart, strong-willed young woman facing monumental challenges: overcoming social stigma, evading a jealous king and bearing the weight of a world-changing destiny.”

Caruso also defended the decision to cast Israeli actors saying it was “important to us that Mary, along with most of our primary cast, be selected from Israel to ensure authenticity.”

Last month, audiences condemned Netflix’s removal of an entire library of Palestinian movies, in a move dubbed anti-Palestine by many. However, the streaming platform claimed that titles were removed due to licenses expiring.

Jesus was a Jew of Syrian descent. So in all likelihood was as white at least as Bashar Al Asad or Nicholas Nassim Taleb, who pointed out this fact.

These Israeli actors are not native to the land. Those in control are of European decent and do not represent the locals.

Virgin Mary was an observant Jew, who was born and lived in the area which is in today’s Israel. So a Jewish Israeli actress playing the role of Mary, makes complete sense. Looking forward to the Netflix series.

Nothing wrong with it, not all Israelis are bad, just a few political leadership are doing bad things in Israel and killing innocent civilians of Gaza in Palestine are dying because of unjust acts of few countries as well. Just pray to end this madness in Palestine and Israel and entire Middle East and Ukraine.

If people already dubbed Netflix removing their Palestinians content as anti-Palestine, then why act surprised they are casting an Israeli? Netflix always removes content after a certain time to ensure variety. Also I'm not sure it's a good idea to allow politics to spill into entertainment, because then they have to apply this to all countries and then there will be nothing left. All countries/governments are complicit in human rights violations, corruption and wars etc in some degree. Considering the foreign policy, wars, violent history of the UK and the US, their actors and shows should be boycotted. The UK directly caused the wars in Palestine and Kashmir since 1947 and 1948. Both regions were under the British. Instead just treat entertainment for what it is: entertainment. If you don't like one streaming service then opt for another. It's not like Netflix is the only provider.

@Ramu I can't speak for all their actors but if you are trying to claim that majority Israelis are not descendants of Jews in Palestine then you are wrong. At least 2/3 of Israeli Jews are in fact descendants of Palestinian Jews. The rest migrated from Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia (Asia includes Jewish migrants from other Middle Eastern countries). Most (especially Pakistanis) don't know that there were Jews native in the Middle East before creation of Israel. Also light eyes, light skin and blonde/light brown hair are not uncommon for Palestinians nor Jews. That does not make them "European".

Stop this jew hating mentality in Pakistan. Yes you can have a serious disagreement with Israeli policies but to blame Netflix for hiring Israeli actors is being racist and misogynistic.

By ethnicity and religious background Mary, Joseph and Jesus himself were Jews. None of them were Arabs or of any other ethnicity. So what exactly is the problem in casting an Israeli Jew as Mary? And what exactly does someone mean when they say Mary the mother of Jesus was a "Palestinian Jew"? All Israelis are descendants of Jews who were expelled from the land that is now Israel and Palestine.

Just because some Actors are Jews, it is hypocritical to blame them for the crimes of others. Same as when jihadi terrorists murder others, all the Muslims are not to blame.

@@Farrukh Jesus was a Jew of Palestinian descent, not Syrian descent. Syrians and Lebanese of today (Bashar-al-Asad, Nassim Nicolas and others included) have European ancestry. That was not likely the case some 2000 years ago.

Look, first people labeled Netflix removing their Palestinians shows as anti Palestine and now those people act surprised they are casting an Israeli? They can cast whoever they like. Also it is true, that Netflix removes content after a certain time to ensure variety. Dont mix politics and entertainment because then it won't stop there. Many countries/governments are complicit in human rights violations, corruption and warfare. Considering the foreign policy, history of wars of the UK and the US, all their actors and shows should be boycotted too. Remember, UK directly caused the wars in then a British mandate of Palestine (1948) and Lord Mountbatten's influence on the Kashmir issue (1947). Both were under the British. So just treat entertainment for what it is: entertainment. Otherwise, don't watch the show or find another streaming service.

@Frank Where are you from? I have met quite a few Syrians, and they all look "white". Light eyes and blonde/light brown hair etc being common. Assad certainly looks like an Arab from that region. Also, European is not a monolith. Europe is a continent with many countries and ethnicities. South of Europe is not the same as north of Europe. A Spanish or Italian person looks very different than a Norwegian, Swede, German or Romanian etc.
