After rumours swirled on social media that legendary singer Atif Aslam was opposed to singing in Saudi Arabia because of proximity to religious sites, the singer is setting the record straight.

In a statement to journalist Maliha Rehman, the ‘Tere Liye’ singer clarified that he had performed in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, in the past which was “the best way of proving our opinion on the topic”.

Earlier today, several local media outlets reported that Aslam did not want to perform in Saudi Arabia because he could not accept performing near holy sites.

However, the singer quickly dismissed those rumours. “It is funny and strange that statements that I have never made get connected with me.”

Aslam said the media and artist community bear the responsibility for checking the validity of a statement before reporting it and making comments on it.

Singer Atif Aslam is welcome anywhere just like in the past Rafi, Mukesh, Talat or Lata in the music world.

We need to reduce rumors and lies in our country. It is a very regressive sign for our society.

Atif Aslam doesn't want to sing near holy sights. Perhaps that is why he prefers to sing in India where he finds himself farther away from holiness and patriotism.

I am sure if offered he may even perform in Tel Aviv Israel. After all human rights violations have no value to people. Celebrities from Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, Ronaldo to Eminem have graced Saudi Arabia with their presence.

I'm against the whole concert culture even in Pakistan. See the UNs own SafeSpacesNow campaign for just one reason why.

@Shaista Fair enough but are you then implying that the Saudis have no respect for their religion? After all Saudi Arabia is more than being the birthplace of Islam, it is also a nation of people who like entertainment. Don't you think their scholars would've prohibited this if they thought it was disrespectful to religion?
