Anoushey Ashraf, Nadia Hussain stand by single women after Zakir Naik’s ‘bazaari aurat’ comment

Married or not married, children or no children, you are respectable members of society, says Hussain.

“Islam is so beyond and deeper than regressive ideologies and banter around such stuff,” said RJ and host Anoushey Ashraf in reaction to a statement made by public orator and religious preacher Dr Zakir Naik in which he said single women have two choices in life — marry an already married man or become a ‘bazaari aurat’, a term he translated as ‘public property’.

The preacher made the controversial statement at a public event at Governor House in Karachi on October 3 in response to a question about why men are allowed to marry more than once in Islam — a question that has been put forth before many scholars, who have addressed it with a nuanced and sensitive approach.

Dr Naik responded and spoke about how Islam only allows multiple wives if the husband was able to “do justice” to them. He then spoke about the life expectancy of men being lower than women and wars further reducing the population of men.

He argued that there are many more women than men, therefore even if every man married once, there would be many women left with no one to marry. “So what option do they have left? They have two options — the first is that they marry a man who already has a wife. Or they become a ‘bazaari aurat’. ‘Bazaari aurat’, such a strong word! In English, I would say ‘public property’. People complain about it but I say I don’t have a better word for it.

“If you were to ask any good woman, if you are unable to find a man to marry who isn’t already married, and you have two options — marry a man who’s already married or become a bazaari aurat, any good woman would say she’d prefer the first option.”

In an Instagram story posted on Wednesday, Ashraf said, “First we say, Allah makes pairs and one’s wedding happens when God wills it. Then we say ‘you’ve got to be someone’s second wife or a bazaari aurat’ if you’re not married in time? How can I be married if Allah hasn’t willed it yet?”

She said inner growth, love and the power of prayer is all sidelined in religion and what instead remains [because of such statements] is this kind of conversation. “I know women getting married in their late 40s today, to nice men and they’re very happy MashAllah,” she said. “There is a certain [segment] this talk can sell to, [and I] am sorry Pakistanis are only evolved to this level of preaching. Perfect market for him.”

Actor Nadia Hussain also shared a post on Instagram on Wednesday in which she said, “Unmarried women, you are not bazaari, you are not public property. Married or not married, children or no children you are respectable members of society. Please do not let anyone think of you otherwise.”

“Here’s something we all need to understand: women, whether they choose not to marry, struggle to find a suitable partner, or become widows, are NOT public property,” comedian Shafaat Ali wrote in a post shared to X. He said this mindset was neither humane nor rational.

Compassion is something that is at the very core of Islam and we hope that people who speak on it keep that in mind when addressing complex matters. With a following as massive as Dr Naik’s, there is an even greater responsibility to treat people with respect and choose words carefully. There is no need to put anyone down while making a point.

In islam marrying is not compulsion. One should marry only when he/she can share the responsibilities fully and properly. Dr Naik need to use language and words carefully.

In my humble opinion, that was only an example to make understand the questionnaire not the selltled opinion of Dr Zakir Naik. He didn't ever say that any women who don't marry become public property, Astugfirrullah. He only portrait the situation to make answers.

It’s so senseless. I have seen a number of good girls having their lives destroyed after getting married to a toxic man. Those girls are educated and have good jobs. They earn well. They wish they never had anything to do with marriage. The break up left deep scars in their lives but it was good riddance for those girls. Marriage is important but a woman can surely live a decent n happy life without ever getting married.

We all have to know that Muslims in India live with Hindus mostly so the are More culturally close to them. In Pakistani society things have a little better understanding. And I hope with these sessions people are now clear about Dr Zakir now regarding his political religious views which are kind of time trapped now

First we have to think that woman is also human being and she has the right to live and breath in open air where no one can judge her. Islam is a broad religion and why we always drag women and restrain Islam to women only.

Is there such a thing as a bad woman? Or a woman has no moral responsibility. Everything is good as long as she's a woman? This is wrong. A girl who sleeps around is a bad woman. A woman who dances in front of men by choice is a bad woman. A woman who shows her beauty to every man is a bad woman. Zakir Naik shouldn't have used this term.

Please i request you all to think positively rather than taking only his words. We should and all of us respect a women as mother as wife as sister and any relationship which is permissible in Islam. Think positive and only take positive from his speech otherwise we cannot and never be able to get right Islaah for ourselves.

Nice ladies must choose the lead a married life. Single parent concept is West's baby and not preferable in Islam. If a woman chooses to live alone, then she is vulnerable to such remarks and not possible to remain pure as sexual desire is a powerful and natural motive which needs to be satisfied through halal means rather than curbing or diverting to misleading thoughts.

@ABID IHSEN So single women who don't or can't marry are not nice women? You don't get to decide who should marry and who should not. That's dependent on consent of that woman (or man). Marriage is not compulsory in Islam. Chastity is compulsory. Learn the difference. So women can survive perfectly fine without falling prey to Zina. Also we are talking about unmarried women, not single parent concept. Don't confuse the two. Also single parent is not "Wests baby". The prophets mother was a single mother, as she raised him single handedly because her husband was no more. There are many single mothers in Pakistans and Ummah. Kindly learn, what the words (you use) mean.

@AHMED I don't know what your issue with women is. You seem to dislike them. Not sure why. I don't hate men just because a few are bad. Every human is responsible for their words, actions and intentions. Only your sentence makes sense. The rest is just you talking about irrelevant issues. The topic at hand is about unmarried women and ZN calling them prostitute and public property. Stay on topic.

Marriage is an extremely serious and private matter. It is a permanent contract for life with the attached clause of "compromise". And if you are unwilling to accept this and value your freedom more then don't get married or else you will be the most miserable person for the rest of your life.?

Unfortunately the desi culture is deeply rooted in misogyny, patriarchy and hypocrisy to the point that authentic Islam has been changed (bidah) into what culture says. ZN also follows culture ove seen. Some commentators are completely lost when defending him. They don't understand that such serious vulgar accusation against women, calling them prostitutes and public property if they dont marry at whim of men whether they wish to or not, is not islamic. Why don't people understand chastity which is mandatory in islam on both men and women? Chastity is literally translated in Urdu Quranic translations as "protecting your private parts from zina". And this protection (abstinence/celibacy) applies whether married or unmarried. That's why you are not allowed to have affairs or cheat on your spouse. Make up your mind. One one hand such males claim the male sex drive is so high that men can handle 4 wives. On the other hand they now claim women have no control over their evidently equally high libido and therefore must marry?

@JAMIL SOOMRO Thats not even the topic. There is no "attached clause of compromise" when getting married. The Pakistani Subcontinental desi way of understanding 'compromise' is that it's one-sided and for wives only. Husbands don't have to practise sabr, compromise etc. If women don't accept, divorce is held over their heads as a stigma and "end of life" thus forcing women to compromise even in abusive and violent marriages. If you talk about compromise in marriage in the islamic sense then that's completely different and the weight of it disproportionately higher on the husband than the wife because the husband is the leader this more responsible. That said the topic at hand is calling unmarried women 'public property' and 'prostitutes'. Your comment is unrelated to it.

There are many scenarios while debating women so in my opinion doctor zakir naik addressed the worst of all scenarios by mentioning unmarried women will a public property. He doesn’t meant about all the unmarried women, of course, there would be many unmarried respectful women around him as well. Please don’t take him wrong it was probably a mistake in elaboration and understanding. Nothing else.
