Meryl Streep says a ‘squirrel has more rights’ than an Afghan girl

The Oscar-winning actor believes the international community could affect change in Afghanistan and "stop the slow suffocation" of women.

American actor Meryl Streep has said a “squirrel has more rights” than a girl in Afghanistan, adding her voice to a call by Afghan women to end the Taliban government’s severe restrictions on their lives.

Taliban authorities have implemented an austere interpretation of Islamic law since returning to power in Afghanistan in August 2021 following the withdrawal of US-led forces.

Women and girls have borne the brunt of restrictions — including being barred from public parks, universities and singing in public — which the United Nations has labelled “gender apartheid”.

“A squirrel has more rights than a girl in Afghanistan today because the public parks have been closed to women and girls by the Taliban,” Streep said during a discussion on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York on Monday.

“A bird may sing in Kabul, but a girl may not and a woman may not in public,” the Oscar-winning actor said.

“I feel that the international community as a whole, if they came together, could affect change in Afghanistan, and stop the slow suffocation of an entire half [of] the population.”

The Taliban government, which is yet to be recognised by any other country, published a widely criticised law in August further tightening restrictions on women’s lives.

While many of the measures had been informally enforced since the Taliban’s takeover in 2021, their formal codification sparked an outcry from the international community and rights groups.

The “vice and virtue” law dictates that a woman’s voice should not be raised outside the home and that women should not sing or read poetry aloud. It requires them to cover their entire body and face if they need to leave their homes, which they should only do “out of necessity”.

Asila Wardak, a leader of the Women’s Forum on Afghanistan, said at the UN discussion that Afghan women were there to remind world leaders that “this fight is not only an Afghan fight” but “a global fight against extremism.”

Speaking about the situation of Afghan women during the General Assembly this week was “a small sign of hope” for them, said Fawzia Koofi, a former member of parliament in Kabul.

“But it’s not enough,” she said, calling for the appointment of a UN special envoy to put pressure on the Taliban government.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that discrimination against women was causing major damage to Afghanistan.

“Educating girls is one of the fastest ways to kick-start economic development and improve the health, well-being and prosperity of communities and entire societies,” Guterres said.

“Women’s participation and leadership has proven benefits for peace and security, social protection, environmental stability and more,” he said.

“Afghanistan faces serious challenges in all these areas.”

What are you crying now? When 20 years effort of hyper-power, the so called invincible USA and it's 3 trillion dollars, failed to change even a splinter of Taliban and escaped with tail between the legs, leaving even their war-assets behind, what the lame actress can do to change the reality on ground of Afghans?

Great work by Meryl but at the same time it would have been very humane to raise voice for murder of women and children in Gaza.

The Western world's criticism of such ridiculous laws will not be taken seriously due to the baggage of their past interferences. The Muslim world needs to speak out about this craziness to bring legitimacy to this criticism. Afghan women have a right to be free.

Such a hypocritical country, thousands of children are massacred in Gaza funded by their taxes and aid. Yet all they can speak about is women's rights in Afghanistan, the same country that had nothing to do with 911 and they bombed back to the stone age. Give them time hopefully, they will prosper.

Same Meryl, who gave Roman Polanski a standing ovation at the Oscars or other award show, the man who raped and did every deprived thing to a child, and fled the US like the coward he is, refusing to be held accountable for his actions. The same Meryl, who knew about Harvey Weinstein for decades. I know this doesnt change the plight of Afghan girls. Maybe she can ask her previous Presidents Bush, Obama, etc why they allowed the invasion of Afghanistan the realizing after 20 years they can win and withdrawing leaving the country in free fall and in Taliban's hands, why they supported Taliban in the 80s/90s. She knows as well as the rest of us, there is no salvation, protests, boycotts or political pressure for Afghans and Afghan girls. So not sure where she is going with this.

@HASSAN Why insert Gaza and Palestine into every topic? What about Afghan girls and families? What about Uighur Muslims in China (who we borrow money from)? What about Pakistanis being executed without proper trial or legal aid in Saudi Arabia (who we also loan money from)? What about Pakistani minorities Christian and hindu forced conversions to islam, abductions and rapes of their girls? What about the Balochis and their forced disappearances and unlawful killings? What about the children and adults of Rwanda? What about the Muslim refugees of Myanmar? What about the kashmiris? There are other people suffering other than Gazans, you know? Maybe stop being selective and stop deflecting from the topic.

Its unfortunate that apparently none of the individuals commenting except myself and a few a couple of others seem to understand the content of this article. This article is about the General Assembly of UN which starts in September. Many pressing issues are discussed. The topic was Afghanistan and it's women. Palestine is not the only war in this world. Many people and regions are suffering but apparently majority people in the comments can't accept a single article without dragging Gaza into it and deflecting from the issue at hand: people including girls of Afghanistan. It's very disappointing to read such comments. Images team should not publish comments which have nothing to do with the article. It's not censorship. It's just common sense. Oh an surprise!! currently as I write this Gaza is being discussed at the UNGA. The didn't forget Gaza. It's being treated an matter of urgency with resolutions being passed against Israel and for the war to end immediately. Stop denying Afghan people in their time of need.

@HASSAN The developed world also includes The Gulf countries, Iran, Bosnia, Russia, China, South Africa etc. You need to exit this incredibly reductive and unnuanced way of observing the world as in West VS East. There is South and North too. You convenient also forget that many of the strongest voices have emerged from the West. From Ireland to the South America. Also if you think so of the UN, then why are you expecting them to talk about Gaza, solve anything, stop any war and why are you trying to remove focus from Afghanistan to Gaza. What did the Afghan women do to you for you to deny them attention? Why does their pain nt matter? The world can not pretend that the only burning issue is Gaza. There are many crises and wars. Sudan, Rwanda, Myanmar, Kashmir,Uighurs, Ukraine, and now Lebanon. So either you talk about them or you admit to be selective which puts you in the same boat as those your oppose namely the West. Maybe you should lobby for Pakistan and Muslim nations including Arabic states to not be part of UN, NATO etc. you clearly don't even know that they are member states with rights to veto and pass resolutions. Every article can not and should not be about Gaza. Its just insane to even think that. Also human rights is not a western invention. Stop. It's a universal terms which Pakistanis especially outside Pakistan benefit very much from and are not shy to use. If you dont support human rights then you can't blame Israel for not valueing Palestinian lives. Their argument would be the same as yours. Human means human. But apparently some humans to you matter, whilst others don't. Don't be surprised others in the wold also think like you. That's why we have wars. You can't have wars without dehumanising your opponents. Don't take away the humanity of Afghans just because you only care for Gazans.

@PARBAT Afghan women are not safe in their houses. Kindly stop with the denial when you are neither an Afghan woman living under Taliban in Afghanistan nor do you have proof of this. I suggest you study the General Assembly, when MS spoke, where plenty of experts and activists on Afghanistan and Afghan women spoke. If Afghan women are safe in.their houses, then Gazans are also safe in Gaza. Stop absurd claims just to deny some people justice or rights because you think Taliban represents the Afghan people and/or islam. They dont.

@NYS What is happening in Libya lately? Are you sure you did not mean to say Lebanon. The two are distinctly different countries. Libya is in North Africa. Lebanon is in Western Asia also know as the Middle East. Equal treatment would be great but sadly to our Pakistanis only Pal matters. I hope they will not complain when one day we are at war and the world conveniently forgets about us.

You do not need to judge the thinking of anyone and you don't need to be defensive either. read carefully simple comment. I did not deny the wars in the world! However, i will not accept the lecture of someone on human rights who do not have any morality and the case of GAZA it is all the developed world either directly supporting the genocide directly or by being quiet. Don't waste your energy in writing long paragraphs without able to understand others point!

It is all about their own interest and then they paint the picture of human rights by these celebrities to fool people amongst us. People are smart now, they need to find another ways!

Well an entertainer is and should be an entertainer, on another note we have seen her rights being evoked many a times under the name of a scene in the movie. Having said that, does not defend the abuse of any human rights of any human in any territory. What is wrong , is wrong and has to be fixed.
