The 2024 Grammy Awards — which honour the best recordings, compositions, and musical artists — were held on Sunday, and A LOT happened.

We picked the top four moments from this year’s ceremony that made the 66th rendition special.

4. Annie Lennox calls for a ceasefire during a tribute for Sinead O’Connor

Scottish singer-songwriter Annie Lennox called for “artists for ceasefire” during a tribute performance for late Irish singer Sinead O’Connor — who later converted to Islam and renamed herself Shuhada Sadaqat. Lennox also advocated for “peace in the world”.

The performance was very apt, as O’Connor was very vocal on social justice issues, and in 1992, she ripped up a photo of Pope John Paul II during a television appearance on Saturday Night Live in protest of the Catholic Church’s history of child abuse. While that is the most famous instance of her activism, in 2014, she refused to play in Israel.

“Let’s just say that, on a human level, nobody with any sanity, including myself, would have anything but sympathy for the Palestinian plight. There’s not a sane person on earth who in any way sanctions what the f*** the Israeli authorities are doing,” she told Hot Press, an Irish music magazine, Al Jazeera reported.

If O’Connor was alive today, she definitely would have spoken out in favour of Palestinians.

3. Jay-Z calls out the Grammys for never awarding Beyonce Album of the Year

Jay-Z called out the Grammys during his speech for receiving the Dr. Dre Global Impact award for failing to ever award his wife Beyoncé Album of the Year.

Jay-Z discussed how he has always wanted the Grammys to recognise the artists that most influence culture, Variety stated.

“How far we have come with Will Smith, Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, winning their first Grammy in 89 and boycotting, because it was not televised,” he said. “And then they went to a hotel to watch the Grammys. I don’t even understand, it was not a great boycott. But then in 98, I took a page out of their book and was nominated for best rap album. And DMX put out two, they were both number one, and he was not nominated at all. So I boycotted and I watched. I’m just saying, we want you all to get it right. We love y’all, we love y’all. We want you to get it right — or at least get it close to right. And obviously, it’s subjective, because it’s music and its opinion-based, but some things…”

He then looked at Beyoncé and said, “I don’t want to embarrass this young lady, but she has more Grammys than everyone and never won Album of the Year. So even by your own metrics, that doesn’t work. Think about that. The most Grammys, never won Album of the Year. That doesn’t work.”

2. Taylor Swift breaks the record for most Album of the Year awards…and announces a new album

Taylor Swift won her fourth Album of the Year award, becoming the first performer to ever do so. She received the award for her 2022 album Midnights. Previously, Swift was tied with Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon and Frank Sinatra — who each had three.

She also announced her upcoming album The Tortured Poets Department while accepting the award for Best Pop Vocal Album.

“I know that the way that the Recording Academy voted is a direct reflection of the passion of the fans, so I want to say thank you to the fans by telling you a secret that I’ve been keeping from you for the last two years,” Swift said. “Which is that my brand-new album comes out April 19. It’s called The Tortured Poets Department.”

1. Miley Cyrus won her FIRST Grammy

Miley Cyrus won her first-ever Grammy award — we’re just as shocked as you are — for Best Pop Solo Performance for her song ‘Flowers’. Later in the night, Cyrus won another Grammy for Record of the Year, also for ‘Flowers’.

Her performance for the song was also stellar and filled with adlibs.

“I didn’t wanna leave you, but I had to. I didn’t wanna fight, but we did. Started to cry but then remembered I JUST WON MY FIRST GRAMMY,” she quipped.
