The Batman sequel starring Robert Pattinson to release in 2025
Robert Pattinson is returning as the caped crusader in Matt Reeves’ The Batman sequel, James Gunn and Peter Safran announced during a recent Warner Bros press event. While the plot stays under wraps, the new heads of DC Studio revealed that The Batman Part II will open in theatres on October 3, 2025.
Gunn and Safran are developing a new DC Universe that includes theatrical release of Superman: Legacy and a sequel of Pattinson’s caped crusader film in 2025. Both films, according to Variety, will remain a standalone property that will fall under the newly branded DC Elseworlds category. Gunn said during the press conference that any film outside the main DC Universe will get the DC Elseworlds tag.
In addition to The Batman Part II and Superman: Legacy, the DC Elseworlds roster of upcoming projects includes Todd Phillips Joker: Folie à Deux starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, to be released next year on October 4. There’s also an ongoing animated series Teen Titans Go! and another, separate, Superman movie in the works by JJ Abrams and written by Ta-Nehisi Coates. The Superman movie was first announced in 2021 and remains in active development phase.
Pattinson will carry on with his role as Batman in Reeves film in the DC Elseworlds sidebar, however, Gunn and Safran will cast a new Batman for the DC Universe category. During the press conference, the DC heads seemed to have confirmed that the DC Universe will include a Batman and Robin movie based on The Brave and the Bold comics.
In addition to The Batman sequel, Reeves is working on a spin-off series centred on Colin Farrell’s Penguin character that we briefly saw in The Batman.
The Batman released in early March last year and went on to be a box office success. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it became the highest grossing film of 2022 so far with a total worldwide take of $759 million.
