Going loco for local: For the love of Raco Chocolate

These chocolate bars are a bit on the pricier side but are so worth it.

Raco Chocolate is a Karachi-based company that creates “handcrafted, single origin, ethically sourced, bean-to-bar chocolate”. To sum up this review in one sentence — the chocolate is a bit pricey but quite good.

It’s available online and in stores in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. I ordered two bars — the Dark Chocolate with Rock Salt and Tanzania 45% Milk. The first was one of the better dark chocolates I’ve had. It’s described as having flavour notes of dark cherry, honey and roasted peanut and while I didn’t really get the taste of dark cherry, I did like it — and so did the four other people I made try it at work.

The Tanzania 45% Milk was described as a dark milk bean to bar chocolate with notes of apricot, red berries and light chocolate. This was some good chocolate — so much so that I finished it too fast and couldn’t bring any to work to share with my coworkers.

The packaging was cute and you could tell a lot of care has gone into making it, from the sweet message inside to the quality of paper used.

The chocolate itself is good but it’s on the pricier side — Rs900 per bar on their website and Rs950 at some of the stores they stock at. That’s at almost par with some Lindt bars and Rs100 more expensive than Lals’ chocolate bars. But despite the steep price, I think it’s worth it, especially the darker chocolates which aren’t too bitter for my milk chocolate-loving palate.

A special mention has to go out to how wonderfully accommodating the deliveryman was for a very absentminded and careless customer!

Overall rating is 4.5 stars, with half a point off for the price.
