The PML-N is having its 'let them eat cake' moment with chai

Pakistanis aren't very happy with Ahsan Iqbal and his suggestion that people cut down their tea consumption.
Updated 17 Jun, 2022

If there's one food item that is precious to the people of Pakistan, it's tea. And when someone tells a Pakistani to stop having tea or reduce the amount of tea they drink, you can bet there's going to be trouble. Cue Ahsan Iqbal telling people to reduce their consumption of tea by two cups a day to save money.

Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal spoke to the media on Tuesday and urged Pakistanis to reduce their consumption of tea in order to reduce the burden on the country's foreign exchange reserves. "Because the tea we import we [have to] borrow to import it," he told reporters outside an accountability court.

Until the country independently produces its own tea, he urged the nation to avoid all the items on which precious resources are spent until the economic crisis is overcome.

According to former special assistant to the prime minister on food security Jamshed Iqbal Cheema, Pakistan has 178,000 acres of tea cultivable land. “Pakistan can grow its own tea,” he said in 2021. But it isn't.

Tea is among the top five food items that Pakistan imports, spending around $500 million on it last year (2021-22). Despite research pointing out that Pakistan has a sizeable area of land suitable for tea cultivation, past governments have not taken major initiatives to grow tea in the country. A 25,000-acre project is still in the pipeline and the potential of land that could be cultivated for tea production is even more than that. But for now, the country grows tea on 50 acres of land in Shinkiari in Mansehra district and produces about 10 tonnes of black and green tea.

It was a no-brainer that Iqbal's comments weren't going to sit well with people. At a time when fuel prices, electricity prices and the price of just about everything is soaring, people being told they can't enjoy a simple cup of tea wasn't what they wanted to hear.

People fear a civil war.

It's definitely a red line for a lot of people.

Someone had some very important notes.

Most people straight up refused.

Many took it very seriously.

And personally.

But jokes aside — this is a very serious issue. At a time when the ordinary Pakistani has very little left in terms of luxury, for a politician to be telling them to rid themselves of the small luxury they have in a simple cup of chai is the icing on the cake.

There are many other ways for the government to cut costs — starting with its officials' own salaries and benefits. There's already an extensive import ban, why must the people suffer even more? And at a time when people are barely surviving amidst rising inflation, why is the burden of the successive governments' failures being pushed onto the people?

These nicompoops have no idea what they are doing and are only wasting country's precious resources traveling abroad frequently to enjoy luxuries while the poor people suffer and are urged to not even drink too much tea!! Here's a short list of what most Pakistanis cannot do - with or without government directives: 1- Drink Water - is there much? 2-Drive cars and motor bikes, vans or trucks - can they afford the petrol or diesel?? 3- Be Healthy - when adequate clinics and health care facilities are built in the country. 4- Educated their children - may be in the next century when quality affordable education is available. 5- Save for their future - if there is any money left after high inflation, taxes and other expenses. 6- Trust this government - Who?? The PML-N and PPP crooks?? Not in a million years!!

What you need to realize is that the nation is currently in a very sub normal situation. His suggestion is not entirely wrong. You’re just used to treating luxuries like tea as easily available things, and now they’re not. You need to get used to this life. Live like a Somalian, they don’t drink tea do they.

Constantine Jun 15, 2022 04:28pm
What he said is perfectly ok. Pakistan is the biggest importer of tea in the world. Realize and internalize the fact that you’re now an extremely poor nation and even tea is a luxury. Perhaps hot water is a cheaper alternative.

I agree with what he has said. Most countries in the world (China, Japan etc) progressed by cutting down on their exports. The sad reality is when this was said by another political party 2-3 years back, they criticize that political party instead of supporting the argument. We could have saved millions since it was 1st said.

Tea cultivation requires a lot of water, that is why in India the cultivation is in Assam or Darjeeling area where it rains a lot. Pakistan should have similar areas close to the mountains where tea can be grown. Sri Lanka also gets a lot of rain and grows a lot of tea. Interestingly tea addiction is one thing we can blame the British, Brooke Bond went to each village on a cycle and gave free cups of tea to Indians who never drank tea before

How about you start by asking your master Nawaz Sharif to bring back to Pakistan his enormous wealth from overseas and then ask the nation to drink less tea. And while you're at it maybe ask your coalition partner Asif Zardari to do the same. And if you will not then just keep your mouth shut and at least let this poor nation drown its sorrows in a cup of chai.

Well I have no issues with cutting down my tea consumption but if the government takes precedence. It should first shut down all tea served in public offices, reduce "tea times" in the military. Same should be the case for vip movement in their cars and reducing their entourage of vehicles to cut down on governments petrol spending. Time and time again govt has always asked the public to tighten it's belt while never doing the same on their end. It's time government walks the talk
