Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 will mark the last chapter of the heroic group according to filmmaker James Gunn. The director confirmed in an interview to Deadline that it is indeed "the end for us". Gunn indirectly informed fans that there will be more Guardians but they won't be on his team.

His Jan 27 interview suggests that we won't be seeing Chris Pratt's Star Lord, Zoe Saldana's Gamora, Dave Bautista's Drax, Bradley Cooper's Rocket, Vin Diesel's Groot, Karen Gillian's Nebula, and Pom Klementieff's Mantis wandering the universe in The Milano spaceship.

"It's so, so big and dark, and different from what people might be expecting it to be. I just want to be true to the characters, and I want to be true to the story, and I want to give people the wrap-up they deserve for the story. That is always a little bit scary," Gunn said.

We're The Millers and The Maze Runner star Will Poulter has joined the cast and will be playing the character of Adam Warlock as seen in the ending credits of the second film. According to Entertainment Weekly, MCU's Avengers: Endgame showed Thor leaving Earth with the guardians in the ending credits, which hints at the fact that the Vol.3 will impact Thor: Love and Thunder events and will be a major part of the GOTG 3 film.

Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 is slated for a theatrical release next year on May 5.

Gunn also revealed that he's currently developing another hero spin-off series for DC's Suicide Squad followed by Pacemaker for HBO Max. In 2019, the director had been fired for old-tweets and later was rehired to continue as writer-director of the Guardians of the Galaxy series.
