Priyanka Chopra, Julianne Hough and Usher set to co-host an 'activism competition' show
Celebrities Priyanka Chopra, Julianne Hough and Usher are all set to co-host upcoming television show The Activist that will see inspiring activists compete with each other to see whose movement has the most impact on their world cause.
According to Deadline, the show will feature six activists teamed with three high-profile public figures. These teams will be working together to bring meaningful change to one of three world causes: health, education, and environment.
An activist's success will be measured by their movement's impact on online engagement, social metrics, and the hosts’ input. The three teams will ultimately go the G20 Summit in Rome, Italy to persuade world leaders to back their movements. The team who is able to secure the most support will be the winner of the show.
The announcement of the show's premiere didn't exactly stir up positive reactions on the internet.
English actor Jameela Jamil believes the show will turn activism into 'a game'. "Couldn’t they just give the money it’s going to take to pay this unbelievably expensive talent and make this show, directly to activist causes? Rather than turning activism into a game and then giving a fraction of the much needed money away as a prize? People are dying," she tweeted.
Writer Fatima Bhutto wasn't a big fan of the show's idea either. "The good news is that no actual activists would be caught dead on this show," she posted.
The five-week reality series will premiere on October 22 on CBS.
