Susan Sarandon is the latest Hollywood celeb to lend support to India's farmers

Says she is standing in solidarity with the farmers' protest, urges people to read more about what's happening in India.
06 Feb, 2021

India is in an uproar as more international celebrities lend their voice to the farmers' protests that have been ongoing for the past two months. The latest celebrity to speak up is Oscar-winning actress and activist Susan Sarandon.

She said she was standing in solidarity with the farmers' protest and urged people to read more about what's happening in India. Sarandon isn't alone in calling attention to the ongoing protests in India; she's one of many celebrities and high-profile personalities to support the protests and condemn the Indian government's response to them.

Other celebrities who have spoken up

The first celebrities to speak about the protests publicly were US-Barbadian singer Rihanna and Swedish teen climate activist Greta Thunberg.

Their one-line tweets sent the Indian government and BJP supporters into a frenzy, leading to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs condemning celebrities commenting on the protests and a host of Bollywood stars posting about foreign interference and propaganda against India using the hashtags #IndiaTogether and #IndiaAgainstPropaganda. These hashtags were also used by the Indian government.

Effigies and photos of Rihanna and Thunberg were burnt during protests in Delhi on Thursday. The Delhi Police later also filed an FIR against Thunberg.

Hollywood star John Cusack has also tweeted about the protests multiple times.

Meena Harris, an author and niece of US Vice President Kamala Harris, tweeted about the protests and the death threats she received as a result of doing so. Meena's maternal grandmother was originally from India.

She also tweeted about the disappearance of Nodeep Kaur, a 23-year-old activist who was arrested, tortured and sexually assaulted in police custody.

Piper Perabo, of Charmed fame, also posted about the protests and how international celebrities were being targeted by the Indian government.

British singer Jay Sean, whose real name is Kamaljit Singh Jhooti, posted about the protests on Instagram and said "People that are old enough to be my grandparents [are] being trampled over with no remorse or regard."

Jay Sean's parents are from India.

Influencer Amanda Cerny, who gained fame through videos she posted on Vine, posted about the protests on Instagram and said you don't have to be Indian or Punjabi to understand the issue.

What are the protests about?

Tens of thousands of farmers have blocked roads leading into New Delhi for more than two months, sheltering in tractors from the cold. They are demanding new agriculture laws introduced by the government be repealed.

The government of Prime Minster Narendra Modi says reform of the agriculture sector will bring opportunities for farmers.

The protests turned violent on Jan 26, when farmers broke into the historic Red Fort complex, with one protester killed and hundreds injured. Police responded by shutting down the internet, digging ditches, driving nails into roads and topping barricades with razor wire to prevent farmers from entering the capital again.

The protests are led by Sikh farmers from the wheat and rice-growing state of Punjab in India’s north. The close-knit community, which is spread around the world, has also organised protests in Australia, Britain and the United States.

Andh-Bhakt goons think they can bully celebrities. Hindutva RSS devotees defend Führer Modi with a sense of identification and aggressiveness which is unprecedented in Mafia India. Some of them behave more like his self-appointed intellectual guardians. Criticising Shri Surrender Modi is increasingly being conflated with defaming Mafia India. Touchy lot with fragile self-esteem!

@babu "All out of work ladies coming out supporting Indian farmers to get some publicity." . For decades your country's self esteem has been propped up by the US in a futile attempt to make you strong enough to rival China - and despite that effort the civilised world is still disgusted by your behaviour. Perhaps it's finally time for you to look in the mirror and see what you really are.

Democratically elected Govt has passed the law for the benefit of the country. It cannot be repealed under pressure of farmers. They can protest peacefully as is their right but no violence by them will be tolerated. Govt has already mentioned to the farmers that it is willing to make amendments to the bill if the are willing to talk, but the bill itself will not be repealed. The ball is now in Farmer's court.

Birds (Brains) Tweet Feb 06, 2021 09:55pm
Truly it is said that bird-brained people become celebrities and the jobless masses follow them for their glamour. Twitter is letting these "celebrities" on into a chunk of their ad revenue based revenue if they can drive traffic. And these influencers with millions of followers are jumping on the bandwagon to take the cream - while Twitter sells out private data and choices of millions to the highest bidding ad companies. At least Modi and the MPs have to get elected every 5 years by going to the people. What are these foreign celebrities credentials? Nada, Zilch and Zero I guess. Meanwhile Punjab, W UP and Haryana farmers are hostage to politically controlled arhatiyas and selling to FCI. While even the soil and the streams fail them for their own rapacious farming practices. Tragic.

Modi did everything possible to keep the protest within India by controlling media, suppressing free speech, banning internet, using BJP IT trolls all over etc in a hope that Western media do not get a whiff of it but all his efforts failed and now the genie is out of the bottle. Now all eyes are on India, one wrong move and India will go kaput.

All these celebrities do not know a thing about how farmers sell their produce. I am not sure I fully understand Indian farmer's demands but I know that there are some middle man who make some money out of daily auctions. Most probably they will loose some cream once direct sale to large stores is made. If farmers had protested by themselves and did not allow third party goons to enter into fray I would side with them, but this is now turning into new daily drama serial. It is same situation when CAA law was introduced. None of the protesters knew about the law but were protesting anyway.

She must have heard two words Farmers and Protests. That was all that was required. Every celebrity is today looking for an avenue to enhance their image and social causes are the sure way to get that. Ask her about Minimum Support Price or the word Arthiya, she will not know. Punjab gets the highest value for their crop, they get maximum subsidies. The new law allows the farmer to sell directly rather than an Arthiya which is as per old law. In South Asia the middlemen are most powerful.

What an irony! MOdi was thriving under Trump already, with rallies and stadiums full of BJP devotees from Houston to Gujarat just a year ago! Then the Pandemic hit the world, with both the US and India, the hardest hit of all nations on earth and life changed forever! Even when Trump was ousted and humiliated in a defeat last November, many Indians were counting on Kamala Harris's Indian heritage to favor India, as Biden has selected over a dozen high-profile Indian-Americans in his administration to lead or advise many agencies. Indians were probably thinking '' easy days are here. A chicken in every pot and a Mercedes in every Garage". Modi was arrogant enough to think he could continue the fascist government and keep minorities oppressed, keep the Kashmiris silent and under curfew, trample on civil liberties and create laws to favor his parties at the expense of poor farmers who feed the 1.4 billion . Now India is seeing the result of foolish policies as India is shunned!
