Pemra bans repeat telecast of Ishqiya and Pyar Ke Sadqay for being 'against social and religious values'

Any content found to be going against Pakistani values will be banned without prior warning, Pemra tells media houses.
Updated 07 Sep, 2020

The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) has imposed a ban on the repeat telecast of ARY Digital's drama serial Ishqiya and HUM TV's drama serial Pyar Ke Sadqay, saying the action was being taken over the productions carrying content that went against social and religious values.

According to a notification issued by the authority, the action was taken under Section 27 of the Pemra ordinance. The notification added that the two drama serials could also not be aired on ARY Zindagi and HUM Sitaray.

The statement further said that in light of complaints that have been received by the authority against ARY Digital's drama serial Jalan, Pemra would be reviewing its content and will decide any future course of action once the review is completed.

The statement said that audiences have been criticising some of the content shown in drama serials as well as the central ideas of some of the productions, adding that viewers are agitated over the treatment of relationships that society views as sacred.

"Viewers are registering their complaints in this regard on the citizens portal and to Pemra via the authority's social media accounts and its call centre," the statement added.

Pemra went on to say that all media houses have been told to review their material and that in the future and irrespective of the costs involved, if a production is found to have content that goes against Pakistani values and fails to fulfill the expectations of the public then it will be restricted without any prior warning.

Good move. If you don't like the content, try not to tolerate it when you can simply ban it.

which religious and social values? Morality is at an all-time low. Incest and inbreeding are rife. Serials only depict what goes on in society.

Pemra and pta are organizations that enforce sentiments rather than objectivity. Pemra should just stand for Pakistani Emotions Media Regulation Authority. The whole country just runs on emotions and sentiments. Very shaky foundations.

Instead of banning this and that, pemra would be better advised to ibrrou a rating system and parents should be the ones policing their children not the state.

A right step. If a setup compromises on its basic values under the false label of freedom or "boldness", it loses the right to exist. That is it.

Thank you PEMRA. Please try to keep it up. It would only be in the fitness of things if all future scripts are approved by this body before shooting. In the meanwhile all new dramas be subjected to censorship prior to airing. Deliberate attempt by media houses to damage the moral and social fabric of our values and norms heading towards non-conformism.

It is about the time to dissolve PEMRA and instead constitute a committee comprising two member of SC judges to replace PEMRA. The drama banned by PEMRA has gone through many episodes. It is like closing the barn when the horses are out. What a foolish idea?
