To commemorate International Women’s Day, Academy Award winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy proudly launches FUNDAMENTAL. GENDER JUSTICE. NO EXCEPTIONS — a five-episode international documentary series shot and produced by SOC FILMS, Safyah Zafar Usmani and Shahrukh Waheed and directed by Chinoy.

FUNDAMENTAL follows dynamic activists from five countries who are disrupting the status quo and radically altering the course of history for women and girls – and all historically marginalized people and communities globally.

In the first episode from Pakistan, Rights Not Roses focuses on ending child, early, and forced marriages in Pakistan and how community leaders are addressing the root causes of the issue.

In this episode, the audiences get to hear directly from Zarmina, her family, and a network of community activists fighting to end the scourge of early and forced marriage in Pakistan, where 21% of girls are married before the age of 18.

Rukhshanda Naz, a human rights attorney and long-time gender rights leader who is fighting in Pakistan’s courts to extricate girls from early and forced marriages.

Each of the five episodes profiles a distinct set of remarkable leaders mobilizing to write new futures for themselves, their societies, and the world — working on issues from ending child marriage in Pakistan to pursuing LGBTQI liberation in Georgia, and racial justice in the United States.

Officially presented and released by YouTube Originals and Refinery29, it’s the first time an all Pakistan crew has created a global series.

Fantastic... the jealous amongst us are waiting for Sharmeen to make a documentary about money laundering, off shore tax havens and how that wealth typically provides for a fabulous western education... ..... a building built on a false premise . While Pakistan provides a ready to use set for poverty porn, it should be reminded how the privileged have played their part in robbing the state to bring it to present shape

@Akil Akhtar why do you peddle conspiracy theories and what does it matter where somebody lives? You don't make money off of making documentaries. Also you have no proof for your claims of foreign residence. Your next claim will be foreign funding, I am sure. But tell me if living in the West is so bad, why do millions of pajkistanis live there and are they not patriotic? Why do so many Pakistanis want to settle in the West? Why do all the Muslim refugees and migrants flock to the West? Why do many Pakistanis prefer foreign passports over the green passport? How about you put you unsubstantiated and irrelevant claims to rest and stop the thinking of the world in West and East, black and white and talk about how important it is for us to highlight these social issues and raise awareness, because if we don't, then they will never get eradicated. The image is not being damaged by talking about these issues in the open but hiding them and pretending they don't want to exist.
