Wasim Akram celebrates Shaniera's successful campaign for a clean beach

"This is proof that if we all unite and make a resolution, we can achieve it," said the cricketer.
Updated 31 Jan, 2020

It's been around five months to when Shaniera Akram shared the disgusting medical waste that had been dumped at Karachi's Sea View beach.

"Our beach is a bio-hazard zone and needs to be shut down immediately. I am so sorry to the people including myself who use and love our beach but this is beyond safe," she had previously said.

From then to now, Shaniera had joined forces with many to take action. Volunteers got together with the help of Sindh Government to clean up the beach. And while it looked like a Herculean task, they have managed to get the job done for now.

Husband Wasim Akram took to Twitter to commend the efforts and share the happy news that Clifton beach is as good as new.

He attached his video with a note saying, "Thanks to Shaniera⁩ for initiating this needful campaign and to all government officials and massive thank you to workers who come there every morning to make it look the way it is now."

Akram added, "This could be anywhere in the world. It's a beautiful beach, it's a clean beach. Credit to all of the people who have been involved."

"This is proof that if we all unite and make a resolution, be it as a neighbourhood or as a nation, we can achieve it. So well done Karachi, we got a clean beach."

A very happy Shaniera shared the post adding, "I’m so proud! What a city we have!"

I thought I would not live to see this day. Wonderful and inspiring work. Any measures against recrudescence ? Private initiatives can only be temporary. This must be tackled at a governmental level and at its source.

Great job, but is that the only issue that needed cleaning up. Large amounts of sewerage is openly spewing into the sea making our beaches look black and the water polluted with garbage and stench. Filtration plants need to be installed so that sewerage water does not enter the sea directly. it is no secret that the KPT port boat basin and sea view are polluted with sewerage water being directed into the sea.

And what about the dark water from oil spill and city’s waste water drain into the water? Is She and Wasim can clean it? The pollution of water around the coast in Karachi is epic. It will require sensible sustained planning and population control. If anything quick is possible is the first step BAN PLASTICS

Where is the political party running Karachi? This is their job, but it’s the citizens taking the initiative to bring up the health hazards faced by people wanting to enjoy the shoreline, sad state of affairs in Karachi.

What an achievement by Mrs Akram and lm the people who participated in this. Shame on government officials and politicians who started multiple cleanliness drives but gave up too easy. This shows that in order to achieve a goal one has to keep at it and not give up.

Good initiative... a potent starter for many such more that must begin..... we need to connect at the common man level and fully take over Pakistan functionally, thereby completely isolating and rendering the so called ruling elite useless.....trust me they will be totally eradicated.

@Reality Bites Why does it take a foreigner and transplanted Lahori to clean up Karachi's beach ? Obviously the local government and local people have to take ownership of the area and report anyone who is littering and make sure fines are given to anyone who throws garbage. I hope some system is in place to stop this from recurring.
