Kinnaird College calls off talk featuring Khalil Ur Rehman after backlash from students

"We can't let someone with such views conduct sessions," shared a source with Images.

Kinnaird College for Women reportedly called off an interactive session they had organised yesterday featuring writer/director Khalil Ur Rehman Qamar.

News started doing the rounds on social media that the talk had been cancelled, allegedly after students pointed out to management that an all-girls university should not be hosting an individual who openly insults women.

The event, which was scheduled from 11 am to noon, was arranged by the institute's Centre for Learning and Cultural Development and also included director Agha Jarrar.

A faculty member who did not wish to be named confirmed the same to Images, sharing that it was scrapped after backlash from students.

"Kinnaird has been working on women empowerment for a 100 years, we can't let someone with such views conduct sessions," said the faculty member.

Qamar recently landed in hot waters for his play, Meray Pass Tum Ho and its content when a woman filed a petition against the drama in a Lahore civil court yesterday, saying the drama was demeaning women and showed them as inferior beings in society. The Kaaf Kangana director has also sparked outrage for his problematic sexist opinions (which he likes to pass off as facts) expressed in recent interviews.

Images has also reached out to Kinnaird for an official statement on the matter and awaits a response.

Good decision to keep fiction away from facts. Even a villain in a film or drama, is an artist and liked by the audience for his artist skills, not for his personality. Mr. Qamar might be a good writer of stories but an entirely different entity in his person.

Good! The drama "Meray pass tum ho" is already over hyped as well as the writer.

Sad but not surprising, we as a society are intolerant in all aspects. It would have been an interesting session and would have given insight into reasoning behind his views. Agree or Disagree remains individuals decision.

This is the very antithesis of what should happen at a true place of learning. This would have been a perfect forum to confront this guy with reason and arguments that would destroy any sexist statements/attitudes he has expressed. Banning speakers, however abhorent their views, at learning institutions is not how you truely educate people.

@Inquisitor He was schooled earlier as well but he remains rigid so it’s better to make a statement that his views are not acceptable in a progressive place of learning.

Very few writers write without fear of feminist backlash. No wonder, why mere paas tum ho appealed to such a big audience, especially men.
