Pakistani short film Darling has bagged the Best Short Film Award at the Venice International Film Festival.

According to a press release, "The Orizzonti Jury of the 76th Venice International Film Festival was chaired by Susanna Nicchiarelli and composed of Eva Sangiorgi, Álvaro Brechner, Mark Adams, Rachid Bouchareb."

Darling, which follows the friendship of a boy named Shani and a trans woman called Alina had its world premiere at the festival.

Alina is played by Alina Khan, a young trans woman from Lahore, which is something we appreciate as it shows the importance of representation not just on stage but in the industry as well.

The film has been directed by 28-year-old Saim Sadiq, a film student who went to Columbia University from Lahore.

Now, Darling is gearing up for it's North American premiere at Toronto International Film Festival on September 10.

Underrepresented and suppressed transgender sections of our, otherwise, male-dominated eastern societies need to be given this ray of hope that they belong to global human society at all possible equal levels of prestige and self-esteem. It would inevitably enhance the soft as well as educationally illuminated image of Pakistan in world's sight. Ameliorated are those human cultures and societies where whole social fabric entangles and intertwines less privileged classes and minorties to give them this very positive cohesive feeling that they're an active part of a bigger whole. Pakistani society MUST keep its steady journey towards accomplishing this genuine objective! Heartiest felicitations to fertile visualization of young and fresh mind of Pakistan, Saim Sadiq, for producing such a marvellous masterpiece!
