Pakistani Twitter supports Lums female students after sexist Facebook group is exposed

"The sit-in confirms my belief that the future of feminism and of female resistance is bright in Pakistan," tweeted one.

Last week, Lums came in the spotlight after some of its female students exposed the sexist content of a closed group titled “Dankpuna at Lums”, which reportedly had more than 600 members, most of them male students from the university and alumni.

The female students came across the group and saw that it was polluted with sexist, derogatory and offensive content, mostly memes which slut-shamed and objectified women and also targeted the Feminist Society (FemSoc) at Lums. They took screenshots of the content and shared it to various social media platforms.

People were horrified by what they saw and applauded the women for standing up.

The women at Lums chose to take a stand against the abuse by holding a sit-in outside the administration office, and Twitter again praised them for not backing down.

This incident also prompted one woman to share her on-campus harassment story to prove that this behaviour goes unchecked and unpunished in universities.

Kudos to the LUMS female students for highlighting this issue. These standards must also apply to all groups and platforms.

I am a common Pakistani man and I 100% support the women in Pakistan for standing up for their rights on everything. Enough is enough! This is 21st century the world is moving forward while Pakistani men are stuck in Stone Age disrespecting the great women of Pakistan every chance they get. I have seen it with my own eyes. It is a shame.

Wish i was there to sprinkle rose petals on all these BRAVEST of girls for taking a stand !! do not let go on your principle stance. Things weren't so bad at LUMS about fifteen years back when my son was there. Are we turning it into yet another madrassa like the university new campus ?

To draw a line of moral what wrong and what rights when two gender come close depends on how cultured the society is. And that cultureness comes over time when two gender socialize closely and defined gray areas of tolerance and respect.

My dear young beautiful and intelligent daughters, please do not follow the footsteps of Western societies and culture. Our culture have its own unique beauty, however, men should be restrained from doing such acts.

Pakistani society is passing through a transition phase. Newton's third law (action vs reaction) is in full force. That closed group was probably in reaction to Aurat march and vice versa.

Keep at it. At some point let’s do hunger, health, education, sewerage. Oh and corruption. How many of these ladies and gentlemen belong to taxpayers of Pakistan? Chances are not more than 2% probability since that’s the taxpayer percentage of population. Let’s have a sit in on not paying taxes.... This misogyny is important but let’s not take it over these other issues, shall we?

Go on girls. Nail them . Those who think and act at a sub human level. This is an insult to human intelligence to suggest that it's freedom of speech.
