Muslim woman forced to show officials her pad during airport screening

Harvard grad Zainab Merchant says she told TSA officers she was on her period but they took her aside for more screening
24 Aug, 2018

Zainab Merchant has been getting pulled aside for screenings at the airport since the past two years. But a recent incident made her realise it's time to speak up.

Huffington Post reports that the Harvard graduate was traveling from Boston to Washington DC where she was already expecting the Transportation Security Administration to pull her aside for a screening.

What Zainab did not expect was a call for a "deeper look" after a TSA officer publicly patted her down with more focus on her groin area. Zainab explained she was on her period and was wearing a pad, but the officers took her for an additional screening. When she questioned it the response was given that if she did not comply, state troopers who were on standby would intervene.

Zainab was pressured into a private screening, not allowed to call her lawyer. She was taken to a room where TSA officers demanded she pull down her pants and underwear. She had to comply, revealing a bloodied menstrual pad.

Afterwards she asked for the names and badges of the officers who forced her aside but the officers left, covering their badges. Zainab had wanted to file a complaint about her ordeal, which was one of many she had to endure for the past two years. She has, since the incident, filed a complaint with the Department of Homeland Security through the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

“Every single time, I was being put through extra screening,” Zainab told The Huffington Post, adding, “It was the same exact thing every time. By the third time it happened, I realized this is not random. There is definitely a pattern to this, and I’m on some kind of list that is making me go through this again and again.”

The ACLU, a US-based rights organisation, believes that Zainab has been put under a government watchlist and want to resolve the case. Unfortunately for Zainab, it has not gotten easy since she spoke out.

“I knew that there was some kind of watchlist and so many people are on it,” she said. “But to find out that people are afraid to speak out because they don’t want to be further targeted and seeing so many of my own people and my own community members on this — I’m just very shocked.”

In a statement emailed to Bustle on Thursday, TSA spokesperson Lisa Farbstein said that "the Department of Homeland Security can neither confirm nor deny whether someone is on a watch list or provide any information about an individual who may be on federal watchlists or reveal any law enforcement sensitive information."

Its basically harassment. If their X-Ray screening machines(or what ever they call them) don't pick up something, what do they believe they'd find using only their eyes? It is kind of like asking a high schooler to confirm if the math by a maths professor was correct.

So I feel, she is one of the lucky ones. I have a strong feeling that CAIR is either under reporting these incidents or not reporting them at all. CAIR and other similar Muslim organizations have to be kept under close watch to find out that how many of these kinds of complaint are conveniently rejected by them as a Conspiracy Theory, while people have been harassed and the job doors are unofficially Closed on them particularly the professional ones.

At the very first moment, this appears a clear cut example of inhumane behavior but analysing it carefully and impartially, one can hold those people responsible who promote destruction in the name of religion. Not only in there, now almost in every country one has to undergo many unwanted security checks which is wastage of time, money and respect as well but no one ever talks about them who are the real cause behind all this. We all anywhere in the world are suffering in some way or the other. There was a time when all this wasn't so. Particularly in advanced countries the human rights were observed at peak and still inspite of this incident the lady would never think of migrating to somewhere else.

There are lots of things i’m sure you don’t like in your country why don’t we leave instead of raising awareness and fixing problems . Issues get resolved only when they are raised and great job “Zainab” .The Sikhs have run massive awareness campaigns and every lawmaker understands who the Sikhs are and they in turn propagate their awareness to their constituents and so on . Please remember there are lots of bad people that use Islam as an identity todo crazy things around the world . The response to that can not be silence . There need to be lots of other Muslims that should proudly wear their identity and do great things . Ultimately this will separate good people from bad people instead of good relegion and bad relegion. I have started wearing my ethnic identity even more after I saw the Sikhs campaign and the Hindus help their Sikhs campaign.

I have to arrive at the airport 2-4 hours before departure because I can’t get my boarding card without special phone call to Department of Homeland Security. My boarding pass has special initials SSSS on broadcasting to everyone that I am some sort of security threat. In the guise of security , I am told I have been randomly selected but it happens everytime I go to the airport without fail. Then i am passed through metal detectors and MRI machine. Following this all my hand luggage and shoes are sampled for chemicals and radioactivity. Following this I get a detailed patting including a heavy pat down of my buttock and groin area and at time too intrusive so that I have to shout at that to stop this illegal behavior. We all have to speak up against this injustice on travels with Muslim names and wearing Muslim attire. We have to take the battle to them.

Passengers always feel embarrassed and uncomfortable at security checks, even the big celebrities or actors from Bollywood feel bad, like Shah Rukh Khan ordeals. The security apparatus cannot & must not be compromised under any circumstances, a thorough checking of single individual is no big deal, keeping in view the security of all the other passengers. Ms Zainab has not mentioned that she was check by female officers, and it’s OK if female staff check the women, after all a gynecologist check women by using vaginal speculum, and it’s OK, for the safe of patient health. There’s is nothing wrong if checked by female staff, and Ms Zainab must understand that.

I have lived in the US for 38 years, I am a non-Muslim. My wife and I have what is called TSA Pre which makes it easy for us to pass through with cursory check. We got it free, and now it is available for a small convenience fee. My daughter on the other hand is convinced that it is racial profiling. I repeatedly impress upon her to consider how she would feel if she was on a flight that carried passengers who did not undergo thorough check. Would she still want TSA to relax its rules? Ms Zainab if she feels being targeted can easily apply to be on the TSA Pre list and solve the problem. On the other hand, if she wants to fight it as conscientious objector, we should respect her right. But, I would implore TSA to continue its rigorous search of all passengers, including my daughter and son, to make fellow passengers travel in peace.

My friend's daughter who is a teacher by profession in the UK and her name is also Zainab, was searched and researched at U.S airports. On one occasion when she had boarded the plane, she was asked to disembark and was taken into a room for a body search. When she protested, the officer conducting the search threatened to detain her for 'not cooperating'. She was so embarrassed that she cut short her visit and returned. So if you are a Muslim and you intend to visit the USA, please be prepared for humiliating and degrading treatment at the airports.

It is all about "Mental Health", that is almost always raised in court of law whenever a criminal is on trial! However, the authorities can and must proceed against the people involved on the basis of the following statement:- "Afterwards she asked for the names and badges of the officers who forced her aside but the officers left, covering their badges. Zainab had wanted to file a complaint about her ordeal, which was one of many she had to endure for the past two years". Why did they have to leave covering their badges, if at all they were performing their assigned duties within the prescribed legal framework? The complainant had the Air Line Ticket, Flight Number, Day, Date and Time of the Flight, Name of the Airport, its location and the State! All such information could lead the competent legal authority to act against the accused to serve the cause of justice, fair and square, true and real!

For a lot of us who give the appearance of supporting extremism and justifying it as a holy duty. We can expect more of the same in every single non-muslim nation and increasingly in muslim nations. In the latter, we keep our mouth shut while in the former we talk of human rights and want to be treated on par with non-muslims. This will not be possible, the American supreme court and even the ACLU may start differentiating. It's not because of her religion ...it's because of the country she bolongs to that puts her through this disgusting ordeal. However this is unacceptable treatment towards any woman, pity those officers cheap thrills...

Drugs are generally hide in the groin area only. And worldwide drugs are supplied from Afgan/Pakistan area. Hence they doubt on Muslims. Check how many people get caught for drugs and what is there profile, race and country. Improve image by cooperating rather then playing victim card which now will not work

It is such a shameful act by the authorities. USA do the same particularly to those from Asian continent. All Aisan countries should unite and fight it out.

Regardless of religion or culture, looking at women with PADS full of period blood in the name of security despite having access to body scanners and x-rays is nothing put perverted mindset of some people. Menstrual cycle is a tough thing to deal with for many women around the world. Those who are asking for her to go back to Muslim country are themselves desperate economic immigrant and are not in a position to advice others were to migrate How would they feel if their wife or mum or daughter had to show period pads full of blood to these security guys am sure they will not celebrate this behaviour. Many muslims are born in the USA so this is there country as much as anyone else.

Kudos to the lady for speaking up! A large majority of Americans are very friendly and kind, they will not allow this persecution of Muslims in America to continue in their name for too long. But the victims have to register their protest and raise their voice to get their help. American Constitution goes; By the People For the People Not By the Christians or Jews or Muslims . . . . . . So if you are one of the "People", please take the advantage of it, If one is not involve in any unlawful or illegal activity and has been harassed by any agency directly or indirectly either at work, on street or around his/her residence, he or she better documents all those incidents, collect evidence, make videos, take pictures to support his/her claim and then contact to his or her Senators office. more -

Why do Muslims put up with this unacceptable discrimination by US authorities in the name of 'security'? Where are the Muslim leaders and representatives? Why are they not collectively condemning the actions of the American administration since it is too shameless to end it's own harrassment policy of Muslims.

This is to much how they can treat a girl like this. This is totally unjustly behaved with Muslims and Muslim girls. I appeal for justice, if really security official wants to see someone's pad he/she should go their home and asked the same question with his or her sister and mother

i see many people and not necessarily muslims going through such ordeal which considering the current state of affairs in the world is justified. if doing so we are preventing some crack pot, nutcase of a person blowing himself and all of us then i am with TSA officials here. pls do your job, i dont mind going through any checks if you have slightest doubt that i am carrying something and for that matter any member of my family too. Its just a unfortunate coincidence that the lady in question was undergoing her cycles during the checks which makes it bit uncomfortable for her. The blood might have popped up in their scanners raising alarms bells and besides she seems to be in some checklists. if she is a american then she should know better and comply and if she is an immigrant then as many commentator said here she should move to her native country if its too much to bear. safety is paramount today, try not to stand out from others when you are in social space.
