Reham Khan opens up about controversial book contents

She refers to her biography as "an in-depth book about my life and relationships"
Updated 07 Jun, 2018

Reham Khan has broken her silence over the contents of her controversial upcoming autobiography in an interview with CNN-IBN yesterday.

Her interview, which was featured as part of the show Face Off, reveals that her book portrays her former husband, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan, as two-faced and turning a blind eye to the sexual harassment and coercion that she says runs rampant in his party.

Reham refers to her biography as "an in-depth book about my life and relationships" and explains that "those relationships and their problems... have an impact on the futures of all Pakistanis and people in our region."

She elaborates about the book's contents, "So I've discussed morality in terms of nepotism, meritocracy or the lack of it, sexual harassment, sexual coercion and how sexual favours are used for political and media positions, and some of [those incidents] are directly related to PTI."

While she didn't name them, Reham insists that there are specific incidents of sexual misbehaviours mentioned in the book.

When asked if Imran Khan was directly involved in those issues, she said, "People at the top have to take responsibility for what happens in their household and in their party."

When asked again if women have reason to have apprehensions [of being sexually coerced] in relation to Imran Khan, Reham grew vague, "Yes. Why I've talked about it is that I feel that if one woman can compromise, another woman who deserves the position will lose their career."

Reham also touched on what she called Imran's shifting loyalties which she said was a disturbing trend that voters in the upcoming election needed to be aware of.

"When I voted in 2013 for Imran Khan, I didn't know what I was voting for," she says, adding that she won't be voting for PTI again.

"They haven't done anything in KP," she explains. "When you vote for someone who professes to be different, you have higher expectations. The fact is we have seen the same sort of politics or much less strength in addressing some issues."

"I wouldn't have a problem with someone promoting a certain religious agenda if they believed in it and equally I wouldn't have a problem with someone who's very pro-military because we'll know where they stand [...] But Imran's Islamist agenda is not really an Islamist agenda. It's an agenda that will secure votes. If you're using the right bank vote just to become Prime Minister, I have a problem with that."

She adds, "People have constantly referred to the fact that he's Mr U-turn. There's a line in the book where I say [to him when I was his wife], 'You know I won't be voting for you in the coming election' and he just laughs. [I said] I don't know what he's about."

"It's not only about Imran," she clarified. "[In my book] I traced what is this frame of mind we're in when we go in to vote, what is the information [we have] at hand. You expect journalists covering certain issues to know a little better. But I argue whether we really know what we're voting for."

You don't even need a brain to know who is behind this. Very shameless from PMLN, very shameless.

I have read some of the portion of the book with has leaked over the internet. In my personal opinion Reham khan should not talk about anyone’s personal life especially. Reasons , since I am also married , husband and wife share a bond in which they are very close and knows each other’s family very will. There are problem in every family and it is their job not to discuss these matters in public. Secondly the timing of the book coincides with the elections in Pakistan , which clearly indicated the purpose of launching the book . Since we know PML N to well , they have tried this kind of strategy against Imran khan in the past as well for example jamima linked to Jewish lobby in Pakistan, and Sita white case of Terian jade . So with this background one can easily understand the sole purpose of launching this particular book .

Whatever the politics, the Pakistani electronic media should give her voice. Let Imran answer the concerns she has raised. If Imran is going to become PM, Pakistan citizens have a right to know more about him from someone who has been close to him.

Giving all this to an enemy country. Targetting Imran Khan sprcifically and PTI. Now it is for sure a PML-N sponsored book. She does not know how much harm she is doing to the nation. Hope she gets sued all over the place.

It now seems very obvious that she married IK with a set agenda in her mind. When she couldn't achieve what she wanted, she turned against him. And now just before election she is playing in the hands of IK's opponents. No one would take her seriously, and her fate won't be much different than gulalai.

Going to Indian media is not going to win her any points in Pakistan. That was a big faux pax on her part, not that anyone believes her in the first place.

Reham appeared to be talking about sexual coercion or favors in the party when the anchor was specifically talking about Imran and only when he pressed on her then she said ‘yes’ because she couldn’t say anything else without destroying future of her book and herself. Many PLMN leaders have been predicting for couple of years that her book will come out right before election and she says it takes that long to write a book. I think she’s lying and just doing this to make money. I’ve lost respect for her.

Empty promises and no real change in KP. There is little difference between IK and India’s Khujaliwal. Shot to fame without doing any good for people even after winning election in state polity.

Look how shallow she is in interview. One basic principle of husband-wife relationship is that whatever happens or happened in this relationship is an "amanaat " ( English equivalent Trust ) between them.....If something is done against law in relationship then its a different thing, one should seek justice through law...There is very little doubt that she is doing this for money only.

It is praiseworthy if the author wishes to highlight the misogynous culture and virtually abysmal attitude of the society towards women , it is a welcome step and useful. On the other hand if it is a blame game and vendetta against one person it is to be deplored. There was not much she did not know about her ex before she married him. Imran life has been an open book since he was a student and married the first time. All his team mates know about his outbursts . But he always controlled it and used it to the best advantage of his team. He is a decent man has enormous talent. He is no angle . Like harassment at work or place of women in the society is a valid issue . It is flaged up every so often in the UK and big demonstrations are held to move the society towards civilised values. In this regard Author's attempt is a valuable tool. However remember, if Reham did not have a link with Imran Khan her book would not be a subject of any debate.

There's always some truth in whatever is spoken. The person can not be dismissed and insulted just bcoz the person on the opposite side has popularity... If there is any truth in the book, we are aiding and abetting in further downfall of our country.
