Censor board says female-centric film Veere Di Wedding will be banned in Pakistan due to "vulgarity"

Starring Kareena Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor, Veere Di Wedding is India's first major female comedy film
Updated 31 May, 2018

Bollywood film Veere Di Wedding, touted as "India's first real chick flick", is being banned in Pakistan, confirm sources at the Central Board of Film Censors (CBFC).

"Members of the board have unanimously decided to not the allow the film for public exhibition in the cinemas as per Censorship of Film Code 1980," CBFC Chairman Danyal Gilani said to Images.

Starring Kareena Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor in main roles, Veere Di Wedding follows four friends in Delhi as they navigate the ups and downs of preparing for a big fat desi wedding. Kareena stars as the bride-to-be, whose last-minute wedding jitters are getting the best of her, while her over-the-top friends carry their own emotional baggage into the messy situation.

The trailer made it obvious that the film contains mature themes and profanity and is intended for an older youth audience:

But the censor board is having none of it.

"The censor board held a meeting and watched the film and have decided that it is not fit for screening in Pakistan. The main issues are vulgarity and language and also theme. Official announcements will be sent shortly," shared a source at CBFC.

Veere Di Wedding releases globally on June 1.

Sir, Pakistani audience is much matured than you think. Consider the porn traffic of Pakistan as per data from world's leading IT sources. There is a deep disconnect between government and audience. If people are protesting then ban it. Rest is just figment of imagination and a fake sense of responsibility as custodians of culture.

People who want to watch it will watch it, can't ban anything in this age. Did not liked the trailer and would have avoided it anyway, a complete chick movie. Adults should have the right to decide.

They wouldn't have banned it if the characters were male.

Censor board must have enjoyed the movie and watched it several times under the pretense to determine if Pakistani public should see it or not

Pakistan and Pakistani's wouldn't be high ranked online porn watching and downloading nation if right trade offs are made. A few cuts without compromising the story and plot of the movie would have been enough rather than banning the whole movie.

These days where everything becomes available online why would you stop a movie in theaters. Government will loose tax money Cinema Halls will loose money, their works and vendors will loose money. Come on guys it is 2ist century and there is nothing in the movies that young people have not seen online. Government should not preach morality leave it up to each individual.

I do not particularly like hearing foul language in movies, but, really, it's nothing we haven't heard before. It's true that this kind of film is not suitable for a young audience, but adults are quite capable of deciding for themselves whether to see a certain film or not.

We should support women centric films... Don't try to teach morality leave it up to each individual... Even if it is banned people will download it from torrent and finally the govt. will lose its tax share.
