Israeli awards ceremony cancelled as Natalie Portman opts out

Portman said she “cannot in good conscience move forward with the ceremony"

The Genesis Prize Foundation has cancelled its award ceremony in Israel after Hollywood star Natalie Portman refused to attend it.

According to their site, the Genesis Prize Foundation was set to honour the Israeli-American Hollywood star but announced on Thursday that her last-minute decision to not attend had let the organisers no choice but to cancel the ceremony.

A spokesperson for Portman claimed that the “recent events in Israel have been extremely distressing to her and she does not feel comfortable participating in any public events in Israel.”

The representative quoted Portman and said that she “cannot in good conscience move forward with the ceremony.”

Said the foundation about Natalie, "Ms. Portman is a highly accomplished actress, a committed social activist and a wonderful human being. The staff of the Foundation enjoyed getting to know her over the past six months, admires her humanity, and respects her right to publicly disagree with the policies of the government of Israel. However, we are very saddened that she has decided not to attend the Genesis Prize Ceremony in Jerusalem for political reasons. We fear that Ms. Portman’s decision will cause our philanthropic initiative to be politicized, something we have worked hard for the past five years to avoid."

The Genesis Prize, dubbed by Times Magazine as 'The Jewish Nobel,' recognizes “extraordinary individuals who serve as an inspiration to the next generation of Jews.”

Well Done Natalie Portman. This goes to show we can not generalise. There are Israelis who are concerned about Palestinians and stand for what is right no matter how unpopular it may make them We in Pakistan need to also wake up and start protecting our minorities and the oppressed.

Bless you heart beautiful soul Natlie. I always have love for the peace loving Jewish people two state solution is the only way. 1000 were injured by live fire by Israeli soldiers just in the recent border Palestinian protest and dozens killed. If this was the other way around the world media would playing it on air for months to years at time.

It is easy for American Jews to support Isrtael. Not so easy for them to support the Likud Party or the Ultra Orthodox Israeli hardliners. The Ultra-Orthodox border on insanity.

The Genesis Prize Foundation, an organization devoted exclusively to Jews, I was wondering famous Harvard Law professor Alan Dershowitz if has been honored by Genesis. He is a zealous supporter of Jewish State.MS Portman for some reason has refused to accept the honor. Is it because of the brutal treatment of Palestinians by Jewish State? If so, she should expect a flood of hate emails from American Jewish pro-Israel lobby,AIPAC

Now she'll be vilified and criticized for speaking the truth. There are lots of good-conscience Jews in the US who stand firmly against the apartheid policies of Israel and sympathize with the oppressed Palestinians. But the social ostracism they have to endure is too much. There's a big price to pay if you oppose Israel.

A sensible decision...Giving legitimacy to Israel's racist policies should not be a priority with any humane individual.

Natalie is way better than those muslim rulers who're too scared to utter a single word against Israel and its aggression against innocent Palestinians. We have immature de-facto rulers who're allowing Israel to use its airspace to attack another Muslim country and then we have this brave Jewish woman who's standing up against aggression of Israel. And, we thought muslims were better than all other people around there world--what a joke.
