Indian cricket captain Mithali Raj shuts down a reporter for asking who her favourite male cricketer is

"Do you ask male cricketers the same question?" responded the Indian cricket women's team captain
23 Jun, 2017

It would be close to impossible to find an instance where a male cricketer was asked by the media about his female counterpart from the same sport.

No wonder Indian cricket women's team captain Mithali Raj doesn't appreciate being asked about who her favourite male cricketer is.

On the eve of the Women's World Cup at a media roundtable event, Raj shut down a reporter who threw a sexist query at her.

"Do you ask the same question to a male cricketer? Do you ask them who their favourite female cricketer is?" she said to the journalist in question, reports ESPNcricinfo. "I have always been asked who's your favourite cricketer but you should ask them who their favourite female cricketer is." Raj also spoke about the imbalance of attention the men's team receives compared to the women's team.

“There’s a lot of difference because we are not a regular on television,” she said. “Now the BCCI has made an effort that the last two home series have been televised and social media has improved a lot of it but there is a still a lot of catch-up to do in terms of recognition”.

Many took to Twitter to applaud Raj for her response:

The ICC Women's World Cup 2017 is slated to start tomorrow and India will take on England in their first match. Here's wishing the team all the best.

@HUMMING She could've politely redirected the question rather than being confrontational. Answers appears alright but somewhat arrogant as well. Men are captains and women are vice captains and without either one of them the team of life cannot survive. Hence they are not equal but bits are equally important and irreplaceable.

@HUMMING lol... If they are then please let the men's cricket team play against the women's team..why have separate tournaments for men and women? Stop being childish. they may be equally wise but not physically.
