Three LUMS students are doing their part to feed Pakistan's poor

Their initiative ‘Rizq’ is a much-needed bridge between the overfed and the malnourished
21 Nov, 2016

In April 2015, during a discussion on class disparity, malnutrition and hunger, university students Huzaifa Ahmed, Musa Amir and Qasim Javed came up with a simple idea: they would feed the underprivileged and malnourished by collecting food that would normally go to waste and delivering it to those who could not afford a meal.

Within a short span of time, 'Rizq' was born — and despite its founders being bogged down by academic pressures, the group wants to play its part to rid Pakistan "of the nuisances of hunger and malnutrition."

How it all began

Excited by the idea of potentially creating a vehicle for helping overlooked citizens, LUMS students Huzaifa Ahmed, Musa Amir and Qasim Javed created a public Facebook page for their initiative.

When they woke up the next morning they could not have imagined the popularity Rizq had generated with over two thousand ‘likes’ overnight. Amongst them happened to be Afrah Awan, a graphic designer who voluntarily designed their logo.

The day after their launch the trio got their first call. A resident of Jail Road had inquired about their services and was keen to donate food. Rizq was now in business. They immediately collected and distributed the food to a famished family.

From there on, there was no looking back. They committed themselves to the cause of picking up leftover food, packaging and sharing it with the undernourished and neglected.

They also developed an on-call door service to gather fresh excess food, funded by pooling in their pocket money and using their personal transport.

The balancing act

Initially it was a struggle. The students would get calls during a lecture for food collection, having to go to far-off areas for collection and distribution. They would often burn the midnight oil, trying to balance their studies and their newfound venture.

Amir expressed that the whole experience was very dynamic. They would roam the slums of Lahore, witnessing the trials of deprived families and individuals, who would show immense gratitude towards them for their service.

There were lighter moments too; Amir recalled an incident when all they got was an achar bottle, left over biscuits and candy as food donation after having to travel a great distance.

The task of picking up, packaging and distributing food was done on a daily basis. Javed claimed that they had to let go of their personal social lives for the cause and that it was because of the immense support they generated that they were able to carry on.

A year into their endeavor they realised that it became harder to reach destinations for collection and distribution. Rizq was taking time that was normally set aside for their academics.

But the outcome of kindness is that it draws people to you. Rizq now has more than thirty volunteer workers spread across Lahore, minimising travel expenses and time delays for food collection.

Rizq can now boast extensive achievements. Barely a year into its launch, the organisation has launched a rickshaw service, aptly named ‘Rizqshaw’, that picks up food. High-end restaurants like Monal and Lal Qila have also offered to donate their surplus to the cause. Recently, they even announced a partnership with Pakistan Development Exchange (PDX).

Huzaifa, Musa and Qasim also arranged iftars in slums for interfaith groups and the transgender community as part of a CSR campaign by Kashmir Oil, last year in Ramazan.

The trio also started catering free lunch for underprivileged school children and feeding more than 200 people daily. Not satisfied, they arranged iftars in slums for interfaith groups and the transgender community as part of a CSR campaign by Kashmir Oil, last year in Ramazan.

Support has poured in not just from brands and restaurants, but also celebrity endorsements. They managed to get actor Ahsan Khan involved by extending an iftar invitation to him. The money earned was invested into Rizq logistics.

While Ahmed, Amir and Javed were busy building plans for Rizq their classmates were giving tests for internships at multi-nationals. Their sincerity and commitment to the idea helps them achieve their objective of fighting the menace of malnutrition.

Going places

The trio plans to increase the project’s reach further. An expansion to the capital city of Islamabad next month is their next target. They have already identified Muslim Colony, a slum adjacent to the diplomatic enclave, as a key location. Their partnership with PDX is leading to a more expansive foundation.

The trio from LUMS never knew that their idea could go viral online. Photo: Facebook

Unlike Pakistan, other countries have an extensive network of food banks and community centres that distribute food. Rizq is hoping to create an environment that solves those issues.

The trio plans to increase the project’s reach further. An expansion to the capital city of Islamabad next month is their next target.

The three graduate next year and will look to expand to other provinces. More restaurants will then have the opportunity to feed the poor rather than feeding the bins.

From the day they decided to launch their essential endeavour, after their many discussions on class disparity, till now, they realise that there needs to be a bridge. One that takes the excesses of one class and delivers necessities to another. With a goal to simply share food and share happiness, Rizq seems like it is here to stay.

Finally, LUMS students did what I, as a LUMS professor, always wanted students to do--address basic real-life issues in our own backyard. Hunger and poverty expose students to what people in Pakistan face on a daily basis. I am glad these kids took this initiative. What they have started is not CSR, but SR--Social Responsibility, which is the responsibility of everyone in the society. Thank you kids, this will take you a very very long way in life and your approach to life clearly suggests that you have a big heart. So, don't be discouraged by any thing or anyone. What you are also learning is how to keep your ego aside and ask if you need anything just like when you share food with people they keep their ego aside and simply take the food from you. I wish I could embrace you all in-person and congratulate you for what you have started. To me, this is what our leaders need--exposure to reality, especially in the Muslim world. May God bless these kids.

I have met two types of people in the world. One who are poor because they have no choice and the second are those who are poor because they are not interested in hard work at all. Such initiatives will make the second category of people more lazier than ever. In my view teaching them how to fish is a better alternative than these initiatives. My father was a laborer. But now I am a successful engineer. He worked hard to get out of poverty. Kindly start some initiative to understand that why some people are poor in the first place. Also in the age of Selfies such initiatives are just a Morale Boosting method for Social Media champions. Taking pictures of poor without their consent and posting them on social media and news is not the right thing to do in my view. Every person has a dignity and it should be preserved at all costs.

Honestly, save for the poor kids in these pictures, none of the adults look malnourished or starving. In fact they look healthy enough to be to work and feed themselves. Now they will be just sitting around for the next meal to be delivered to them, without lifting a finger! Noble initiative, but the people being helped are the ones who really don't need handouts.

This is very noble indeed. But in spite of the hard work, effort, administration and very good intentions, it must be ensured, as best as possible, that help is given not to the poor, but to the poor and deserving. We do not want to further the culture whereby some people shun work and rely on handouts.

@Awan The Rizq initiative is breathtaking! Apart from feeding the poor, the contribution they are making through awareness and community engagement is captivating. Glad to know that you have done as well as you have! And, yes, hard work is important but poverty is much more complex than a reductionist like you thinks it is. How about a single uneducated mother with 6 kids to feed whose husband died because he could not afford medical treatment for his Type II diabetes? Remember, there are 25 million 5-16 year old out-of-school children in Pakistan with no hope in sight. Easy to dismiss them as children of lazy parents when in fact they are a direct consequence of collective criminal neglect on part of the federal and provincial governments.

Kudos to Rizq, its team of volunteers and founders for such a great initiative! One idea could be to pitch it as "Youth" initiative - i.e. to scale; start by partnering with other universities in Lahore: e.g. GC, BNU, LSE, Kinnaird, the list goes on - each college "Volunteer" covers 5 km in their vicinity; if you capture most of the colleges, you'll only be left with a small part/suburbs of Lahore where you have to travel a large distance. Show the strength of a) collaborating across universities; scaling up to all of Lahore's restaurants whether big or small/ i.e. Freddy's or your local JD Paan wala/Dhaba - and get the whole city on board. "Lahore Rizq". Scale up across other cities in PK. Starting a philanthropic initiative is superb - but what really counts is ensuring a) it is long term sustainable - beyond these 3 founders; so that its there even 5 years down the line; and b) Scale it up!

@M. Malik Read the article it clearly mentioned the initiative by the LUMS students is all about collecting the food from restaurants and hotels that would have been wasted in the evening or left over food, again being wasted. So this idea makes it a great and noble initiative. 'Rizq' seems to be the best start-up coming from LUMS. Also a few commenting about it will make them lazier, or make them earn a living, or teach them how to fish instead of free food is not correct here, no one can fight on an empty stomach, earning them a living comes later. Also publicity makes other people aspire to contribute their bit...charity and philanthropy makes a society more humane. Pakistan ranks high in charity, that is a great thing...zakat, a form of charity is mandatory.

@Awan When I look at this initiative, I find the food being preserved instead of getting wasted. I find a category of poor, who try their best to make both ends meet but fail to do so, having their children fed with good food that they could only dream of. I can see the unequal distribution of food (in our country) being properly distributed. The project serves not just a single purpose but many. Isn't it great that the food which restaurants would throw into waste is used in a better place for the deserving? Your point resides at its place with its own significance which I respect a lot. The government or private organizations can (and have) established training institutes, however, a person starving to death would not take training. That's where this commendable and unique project plays its role.

@N.Sid Your argument overlooks one crucial point. If the food had been wasted thus far, than it is the fault of the restaurants and eateries, hotels etc.. who could have just put up a sign for poor people to come and collect it at a certain time, after closing, rather than throwing in the bin. While the students have a noble purpose in mind, by collecting and delivering food to those who are less able, or lack transportation to go and collect it for themselves, it yet also makes the recipient more prone to expect more of the same - delivered to their door - cloths, medicine, medical care, fuel, money etc etc.. without making any effort to earn it or finding ways to extract themselves out the vicious cycle of dependency! That's the argument of Mahmood and M. Malik you fail to grasp.

Nice going guys. Keep it up. The positive of RIZQ is that the food is being consumed by humans instead of bins. It is reaching people in need. For those commenters with fish and fishing comments; you are correct in your 'thinking approach' but it would be better if you could come up with some ideas on how to train poor masses. Our vocational training centres are not the answer and are unable to match the needs. It would be great if you actual initiate a campaign or a start-up with a unique idea to train the masses. Surely, we shouldn't leave this to the government, because they won't do it. And if we want to wait for the government then feeding the poor meanwhile would be the right step. So please don't be negative and do something positive and practical first instead of tossing in your opinions only. Your comments show that you haven't seen the actual hunger in our poor areas.

A suggestion for RIZQ is to prepare a list of families in need of their support (esp. families with no one able to earn). This could be done by starting a students campaign across multiple universities and colleges. Each student could contribute the details of families needing the support. Once the list is prepared, you can prioritize the food delivery to those families.

So much good food being thrown out is really sinful. God bless these caring and dedicated young people for their very noble work. Also their parents deserve credit for raising them with such good values. This will encourage others to do what they can to make a difference in society.
