Momal Sheikh upset about Happy Bhag Jayegi delay in Pakistan

The Pakistani censor boards have yet to green-light Momal's Bollywood debut film
Updated 21 Aug, 2016

A debut film is a big deal for an actor, but Momal Sheikh hasn't yet been able to watch her Bollywood breakthrough on the big screen in Pakistan.

Released in India on August 19, Happy Bhag Jayegi has been held from being released in Pakistan by the censor boards.

"At present, we can't say anything about not releasing the film," says a source in the censor board. "There are some restrictions in everything and we must work within them. Right now we are also awaiting a decision."

Momal Sheikh, who is playing a supporting role in the film, is obviously upset with the delay.

The actor tells Images, "A decision is still pending, so I'm just waiting for their response. It was a big day for me with a lot of mixed feelings; I'm excited yet nervous as it is my [Bollywood] debut film. I usually don't complain nor do I [harbour] any negative [feelings] but this incident has really upset me."

Momal added that she doesn't think there were any objectionable elements in the film.

"I've yet to watch the whole movie myself, so I'm personally not even aware of half of the scenes," says Momal, "but from what I've seen and gathered, they have definitely shown a positive side of Pakistan, where they are working on helping Indian women."

Still, Momal is positive and hopes her fans in Pakistan will get to see Happy Bhag Jayegi soon.

"We, here, are waiting anxiously for the movie to release and are hoping it brings a positive effect on our media and country. I am looking forward to watching it in our very own local Pakistani cinemas with the same level of excitement and confidence," says Momal.

According to latest reports in Hindustan Times, the film has been banned for featuring a portrait of Mohammed Ali Jinnah and the character of a Pakistani policeman.

Momal plays the role of Zoya, a strong willed girl who is an entrepreneur of a fashion house. The film also stars her father Javed Sheikh and Bollywood actors Diana Penty, Abhay Deol, Jimmy Shergil and Ali Fazal.

So she is upset that a movie ridiculing Quid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah was not allowed screening in Pakistan. Would India have allowed a Pakistani movie critical of Gandhi?

One more comment to the earlier one: Momal brought a certain sensitivity to her role. Momal's character was more involved than the happy go lucky character of the heroine. She was able to convey the range of emotions that was expected of her to perfection in certain scenes

Its a good comedy movie & I see no reason or excuse to ban this movie in Pakistan also this comedy movie may pacify the tense situation

Indian movies or anything to do with India should be not given any support .

Any Indian movie that has the word "Pakistan" in it gets automatically banned here. However the Wolf of Wall Street with 334 four-letter words escapes the Censor Board's ears and eyes. So does JPNA which gets released with a "Universal" rating!!! When will these double standards come to an end?

I watched the movie with my wife. Both of us loved it ! My wife couldn't control laughing , very hilarious . We agree with earlier commentator that Momal has displayed a range of emotions in a subtle way and has eclipsed Happy !

Momal performed extremely well in the movie. And there's no thing in the movie like disrespecting Pakistan. Infact it shows Pakistan in a more friendly way. Not sure why it has not been released on other side of border!!

Bollywood has given more breaks to Pakistani artists despite all the hatred between two countries. We all should appreciate that.

Momal calm down, relax. They will release it, let them screen it first.

Saw the movie. Momal did a good job. I didn't see anything anti-Pakistan. Though the movie does play up all the usual Bollywood stereo-types of Pakistanis: everyone wears a cap and speaks in exaggerated Urdu. It got a bit annoying. Didn't care for Pakistani characters, including Momal's, drinking but that seems to be par-for-the-course these days. Otherwise, Diana Penty was a misfire. Overall, my family likes it more than I did.

Happy Bhaag Jaayegi is one of the better Bollywood releases for 2016. It's interesting, it'seems funny and we'll presented. Contrary to the title, the film is male dominated with Deol, Shergill and Mishra (pak policeman) doing a great job. Neither Morales nor Penty have much scope, although the latter does an admirable job. I saw nothing anti-Pak in this film at all. One annoying aspect is the exagerrated use of Urdu. Lahori Urdu is closer to Amritsari Hindi or Delhi Hindi than Lucknowi Urdu

I watched this movie, there was nothing ridiculing Quaid E Azam. It was basically him walking past the portrait and commenting in humour on the situation. In fact, the scene with the portrait can be contrasted with the Gandhi scene in the trailer. Pakistan censor board needs to review priorities...
