How #PTIvsDoraemon made us lose faith in Pakistani politics

Pakistanis on the internet are wondering: what on earth could PTI have against a Japanese cartoon?
Updated 03 Aug, 2016

This afternoon, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) submitted a most peculiar resolution in the Punjab Assembly.

The resolution called for a ban of Japanese anime series Doraemon.

Doraemon is about a robotic cat who is sent back in time by a Sewashi Nobi to help his great-great-grandfather Nobita with his problems in life. The robot has gadgets and gizmos that cater to Nobita's problem of the day.

Yes, you read that right. Our lawmakers have been thrown into a tizzy by a robotic cat.

The cartoon's language is said to be "destroying our societal norms".

But many Pakistanis wondered — don't we have bigger problems to deal with? A hashtag #PTIvsDoraemon soon started trending.

Some people were incredulous:

This PTI member was against the ban:

People wondered what on earth was so offensive about Doraemon:

There was this suggestion for a further ban:

So what's next? Oh yes, this:

And this:

This is really stupid. I say this because I watch Doraemon almost everyday with my kids and Doraemon is one of the most scientific, imaginative and clever series for the kids. Where other cartoon series is just about superheroes or something but this one helps child learn and imagine with the new doraemon's gadgets and funny too. I see no reason to ban this. There are bigger problems than this.

How about banning Indian movies and songs of a enemy country, Mr. Imran Khan. But you dare not, because this will displease your Indian actors friends, whom you need to collect Rupees, Dollars and Euros.

I think it's a good move. They should also ban other originally Hindi language and Hindi dubbed cartoons. I have seen kids speaking Hindi language instead of speaking proper Urdu. Kids' minds are easily permeable and thus there should be some restrictions for them. I also want to goad parents to restrict their children to watch these types of programs which have permanent impact on kids' attitudes and behaviors.

We should absolutely discuss what our new generation watches and wat shapes their aspiration. Nothing wrong with discussing that. Uk did the same after London riots and there was a fairly direct correlation made between young minds being influenced by the media content. Thus should culminate into healthy debate.

The purpose of the child cartoons is generally education in a light mode especially for little kids. I myself like to watch these cartoons but I have to agree with others that it pollute our national language, and make hero of someone who don't want to do any homework!!! I believe we should look at other countries and see what kind of programs do they run.

I urge PTI to ban political talk shows. That may be more productive. On the other hand, translation and language of cartoons could be done in Pakistan to conserve Urdu. Regarding the protection of children, Imran Khan's own way of speaking is abusive enough to do the damage.

Every time an iissue is raised...everyone in Pakistan jumps up to say " we have greater issue...or resolve such and such first " Why ? We should address everything that we can. For women whose children will go around stabbing people in the knees...plz understand that its not funny and not ok . Secondly ..certain .cartoons r being spoken against not only in Pakistan but in the countries they originate from. There is a lot of objectionable stuff going on in them. Language...violence...hidden inuendos about sex and homosexuality...nudity... All this done in the garb of childrens programmes. And children r an easy target

Absolutely agree with PTI, well done! We definitely need to ban such a content that makes our children forget their own culture! When our showbiz industry can produce all kinds of drama content, why not something good to teach our own children?

Our children don't watch Doraemon, specifically because we see so many small children using Hindi words in their language which, in our opinion at least, hinders their lingual development by overloading them with Urdu, Punjabi, English and Hindi words. other people surely have an issue with the cultural impact because of the language. Still, I don't think this issue is something MP's need to raise in the Parliament, and this comes from someone who supports PTI in most issues. By the way, is there no capable enough production house in Pakistan who can dub Doraemon in Urdu?

For god sake, stop taking everything lightly, my younger sister used to watch and my mom was strictly against that stopping her every time, with the reservation that the kids in that never does his homework, always gets immoral ways around getting the difficulty solved and was always looking up for flirting opportunities. No moral lesson is there for kids in that. And that's BEFORE PTI pointed this out, no we want our next generation to be morally unaware?

As far as most fans should be concerned, Doraemon is practically banned in North America for several reasons: 1. When Viz Media, the licensor, reviewed the mangas in the first place, it turned out to have large amounts of crude humor and perverted moments, so they refused classification. 2. Same thing for the TV series. When I looked at many episodes, they appeared to have content that would be beyond inappropriate for younger viewers. 3. As a result for #1 and #2, Doraemon never aired in most English-speaking countries. 4. That meant the only way fans could watch Doraemon is by downloading the episodes. However, on November 2008, nearly ALL Doraemon videos were taken down from YouTube for copyright. 5. To today, there are NO Doraemon DVDs selling in the North American market. Thus all of this proves why Doraemon is banned in the US.

The funny thing going on here is that people who even do not watch this "doremon" thing are shouting to the top of their lungs that "bad move bad move" off-course they at-least got something to talk about IK. Where were these same faces when he took a stand for rigged elections? judicial commission? or our most talked about Panama leaks? People are pouring in their comments for taking a step to ban the cartoons that got a language atleast i will never teach my kids "bhagwaan".."shapat" (oath)".."Agni parikhsha" and so much crappy literature. I do not care if it gets ban or not it is on me to decide and control to what my kids watch and learn. But i m disgusted to see people's reaction! It is utmost disgrace for kids to learn Pure Hindi other than Pure Urdu language and Dialect! Think about it please!

Non-stop cartoon channels are a real problem: kids now sit for far too long leading to many health issues, including lung clots, obesity, lack of physical sports and even poor social skills. People tend to have a problem with nearly everything here and feel compelled to shoot down any attempt to curb basically anything. I really like the old PTV times of 4-11PM with one program to suite every taste. Made sure that kids went out, and went to bed early. Now you hardly find a family where kids go to bed on time.

Doraeman is an idiotic cartoon character, especially after being translated to urdu. All the gestures it makes start with a cry. If your children are seeing this cartoon you will see a visible change in your children behaviors, as they will start their demands by weeping or crying, same as this character. So save your children from this cartoon, save your children behavior.

I dont know how many people here commenting are having school going kids but anyhow i fully support this move. there are so many reasons for which this cartoon should have been banned long before. It about a character Nobita who do not believe in hard work, he always go to school late, he never do hi homework in time, he always try to impress a child girl Shizuka, he always try to tackle things through cadgets of Doraemon. So i strongly believe that no parent in this world would like to raise their children like Nobita.

I am an Indian. I hate Doraemon cartoons. These characters do not have the innocence that we usually see in cartoon characters. I can also include Ninja Hatori, Chin Chan and Krishna rollno 21 in these ugly cartoons. I see a lot of comments giving an Indian&Hindu angle to hate these cartoons. Please spare at least cartoons from your Indian/Hindu/Hindi hate.

I do't have much issue with Doraemon but there are other cartoons which have been dubbed with such bad language which is not acceptable at all. Cartoon such as Oggy and the Cockroaches which have no dialogues, yet they have been dubbed in a language, which even Indians call it a "tapori" language. Teachers of kinder garden have launched complaints that children are using words of tapori language in class rooms. Exposure to the outer world is good but it should not be at the cost of your's future generation.
